We tend to focus on 70s/80s nostalgia here so it's kinda splitting hairs on the thread title. I didn't give it a second thought. If you want to get really nit picky Queens greatest hits (a really good album) was pretty much a compilation of their 70s songs anyways. Bee Gees and Abba aren't my fav bands but there is no denying their talent, influence and enduring popularity.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

I need to suggest the Eagles & Steve Miller Band greatest hits albums. Both were on heavy rotation in the late 80s when I was at Penn State. I remember someone routinely opened a window and blasted Steve Miller into the quad between my cluster of dorms.

        Greatest hits albums.

I can't think of one lp I have in my collection, that to me a JUST a "greatest Hits" compilation it's like the end of the line for a band, and it takes away from the bands catalog

so I know I have a few exceptions in my collection

        ASIA: THEN & NOW

Van Halen: The Best of Both Worlds and Best of Volume 1

each one had NEW Material on it.

Zeppelin: CODA; not a greatest hits, but a HISTORY of the band from the beginning to the end and believe it or not, My FAVE Zep lp!!

        and now we get to

        BOX SETS!!!

        CREAM: Those were the Days

        JEFF BECK: BECKOLOGY

        JOURNEY: TIME3

THIN LIZZY: Vagabonds, Kings, Warriors, Angels; ROCK LEGENDS

yeah I bought each one and yes most of the "hits" are on there, but there is MORE unreleased material on each one too, worth spending the cash on them.

So I think that is probably the only time I have splurged on a "greatest hits lp"

        And it can also back fire on you too;

        for example

        DAVE MASON AT HIS BEST

        DAVE MASON's GREATEST HITS

THE VERY BEST OF DAVE MASON

        DAVE MASON SUPER HITS

        DAVE MASON the DEFINITIVE COLLECTION

JEZZUZ KRIST MAN HE HAS MORE COMPILATIONS THAN ACTUAL LPS!!!!!

I love the guy, a HUGE TRAFFIC FAN, but seriously?????

and it's not just him but...

        MOTLEY CRUE!

        DECADE OF DECADENCE 81-91

        GREATEST HITS 1998

MUSIC TO CRASH YOUR CAR TOO 2003

        RED, WHITE & CRUE 2005

        GREATEST HITS 2009

        the DIRT Soundtrack 2019

        Embarrassing MAN!!!!!

KISS Double Platinum. I don't know how many cassette copies of that album I bought through the 80s and even as late as 1990/1991?-ish.

If we’re talking about compilation albums of various artists like the old K-Tel albums, I like Poptopia. It’s all 70’s power pop like The Raspberries and Big Star. It’s on YouTube if anyone is so inclined.
Expectation is the death of discovery.

Eagles Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 A great album, and one of the best selling albums of all time. The Dude can go screw off.

Back in the 1990's Ringo's All-Starr Band was a goldmine of seeing classics performed by the original singers.

Still remember Joe Walsh dressed as the Energizer Bunny while Todd Rundgren was doing Bang on the Drum

                Good times

In addition to the good ones already mentioned...

                  Aerosmith, Greatest Hits
                  Credence Clearwater Revival, Chronicle
                  Neil Young, Decade
                  Bob Marley, Legend
                  Cat Stevens, Greatest Hits

I may still have my bootlegged cassettes of all of those somewhere.

From the 70's, my faves are (still):

                    1 Eagles - Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975)
2 Elton John - Greatest Hits
3 Linda Ronstadt - Greatest Hits

                      I'll add

-The Who- Meaty, Beaty, Big and Bouncy
                      -The Kinks- Kinks Chronicles
                      -David Bowie- Changes
                      -Jimi Hendrix- Smash Hits
-Ramones - It's Alive (another not really a comp, but a great collection)
                      -The Buzzcocks- Singles Going Steady
                      -Neil Young- Decade

                      to the already mentioned

-The Rolling Stones - Hot Rocks

                      -Elton John - Greatest Hits
-KISS - KISS Alive II (yeah, not Double Platinum but I also played holes in it)
-Steve Miller Band - Greatest Hits, 1974-78

and, because I collect K-Tel albums, I'll throw in

                      -Star Trackin' '76
                      -Souled Out
                      -Super Bad
                      -Right On
                      -Music Express
                      WANTED - Solid-Boxed WGSH's, C.8 or better.

There has been some great bands mentioned so no need to repeat those, but I’ll give a shout out to
The Best of Blondie (1979) which hasn’t been mentioned yet, Debra Harry was pretty hot in her day.
