I cannot believe it has been 40 years since Joe Dante's masterpiece came out! Even though I have seen the movie more times than I count, it is still one of the best werewolf films ever made! Joe Dante's direction was superb. The makeup was so realistic. The special effects were just brilliant. Dee Wallace, John Carradine, Slim Pickens, Patrick Macnee -- the cast was fantastic! Yes, I know people always compare it to "An American Werewolf in London." Granted, the makeup was phenomenal in that film as well (Rick Baker won the Academy Award). However, with the cast. and story, I still enjoyed "The Howling" far more. The 40th anniversary film is being released in October in 4K on DVD (hence the article I read).

American Werewolf in London >>>>>>> The Howling.
The Howling has one of the most hilarious unintentionally funny climatic ending scenes ever (I said that, because it was intended to shock everyone, but had the opposite effect to me). Dee Wallace turns into a friggin Pomeranian/Yorkie, lol…
Had she turned into a really terrifyingly proper-looking Werewolf, then I’d rate it much, much higher.
I mean, aside from that silly transformation, The Howling is a solid movie. But I LOVE An American Werewolf in London. The combination of comedy and horror was executed to perfection. The soundtrack rules too.sigpicComment

I haven't seen "The Howling" since the 1980s. I should check it out again. The change at the end was a letdown, honestly. I do prefer some humanity left in a werewolf, but that actually makes An American Werwolf in London that more tragic. There's nothing of David left.
I think the biggest werewolf letdown is "Silver Bullet". The werewolves in the dream sequence look great, but the final reveal of the villain is awful. He looks like a guy in a bear suit. Great movie otherwise, though.

The Howling was very interesting.
It was very memorable and good.
I watched it more in recent years than the early years, but since then I got more into certain Horror movies.
There are a lot of cool parts in Howling 2 as well.
Especially having Christopher Lee in it.
I have the Blu-ray DVD Combo of The Fog and The Howling, it is pretty great.
An American Werewolf In London is also good, and outstanding, and the werewolves in World War Two military uniforms and equipment always stood out from the short scene.
Silver Bullet was another great one to watch recently.
And, though not werewolf, I always make sure to watch Wolfen once in a while.Comment
