In Search Of you favorite Unsolved Mystery of the 70s?

Did you have a favorite unsolved mystery? Were you a Nessie fan or fixated on the space visitors revealed in Mayan sculpture? I know I was not alone in the 70s to be fascinated with Bigfoot or the Nazca Lines of Peru. The first memory I have of using the Maple Shade Elementary School library's card catalog (remember those?) was to look up books on unexplained mysteries. I think my favorite was the Jersey Devil. Mother Leeds' 13th child, a winged, goat-legged devil creature, killing livestock and attacking cable cars!

The beast of bray road and Thunderbirds.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

Sasquatch, Nessie, UFOs, The Bermuda Triangle, Mokele-mbembe, the Jersey Devil... I was fascinated by them all.

At school (probably around Grades 5 and 6) we occasionally had to give talks in front of the class on subjects of our choosing. I remember giving my talks on Sasquatch and The Jersey Devil. I recall another kid in my class choosing UFOs as his subject.

Yeah I think that was Dwyane(Enaywd72)

My youngest son did a science fair project a couple of months ago on Cryptids(he won). It was hard to do a real project as everything was virtual. We have a semi local creature (the Enfield Horror) we included. One of his teachers had a great grandfather that was listed in the news about seeing the creature and we spoke with the teacher and she said oh gosh yes, that's been a story shared in the family for many many years. Also "The Big Muddy Monster" in close'ish as well and once we started doing more research on had a number of police reports on it etc... Some of the other "creatures" were a little more far fetched, but it was a fun project to help with.

I was into the Loch Ness Monster the most. I know I did a book report on old Nessie.

I do have a pretty awful Nazca Lines story. When we visited Peru years ago (my wife is from there), we went to go see the Nazca Lines and I was told it was a helicopter tour, but when we got there, it was a puddle jumper airplane. I had always sworn I would never ride in one. I wasn’t thrilled about the helicopter either, but I figure at least if a helicopter has issues, they seem to have more success on the way down. Since we had the kids, I didn’t want to seem scared so I went on the flight. Our flight was fun with no issues. Having said that, the flight right after ours went up with some French tourists and crashed and killed all passengers. The thing was we were really late because of a car accident on the way there. If we had arrived 10 minutes later, we’d have been on that flight. It was the first fatal crash ever at the Nazca Lines tours. I’ll stick with my no flying on single engine puddle jumpers for the rest of my life now.

I was as well, and I always enjoyed In Search Of and Ripley's Believe It or Not. Seeing the Chariots of the Gods docufilm inspired my imagination, too. In the late '70s, I was a bit obsessed by Bigfoot--because of SMDM and Krofft.

I also recall being worried about predicted swarms of killer bees from watching In Search Of, circa 1979.

In Search Of was one of my favorite shows and just filled my mind with all sorts of mystery stuff.

Who also thought that quicksand was going to be something that was going to be a real problem when you were older?

I think my fav was Bigfoot. I remember going to the movie theater with my Grandma, and we saw this documentary-type movie on Bigfoot. It felt like an episode of "In Search Of" but it was a movie. That was many decades ago, so I don't remember the name, but I think it could've been this one:

I think In Search Of helped a lot of us 70’s / 80’s kids with our fascination with this stuff. The Bermuda Triangle was another one that fascinated me.

In Search Of was a mystery show I watched, who could forget the voice of Leonard Nimoy. What I remember most was the filmed Bigfoot walking and turning it’s head to look back, coolest thing to see as an 8 year old.

                        Bigfoot.

                        Then U.F.O.'s, Lock Ness Monster.

                        Ghosts.

                        Pretty much everything mentioned.

And, now, though, interest has turned to Coral Castle, and the Mayans, ancient Central America, Ancient South America.

Even though, it was all brushed up against in the 70's, it is so fascinating today.

I have noticed shows and cartoons had a bunch of ancient things in them, in the 60's and 70's, and the ancient monuments, or things like them.

Like, I was recently watching The Herculoids and there was an ancient mysterious temple in it.

UFOs. Little grey men. Alien abductions. Missing time. That’s what terrified and interested me the most.
