    More Computer stuff

    So;

    Some folks laughed when they found out my computer is 12 years old. But bits of it are even OLDER; like the 15+ year old monitor. It started tanking on me a few months back, but being poor I decided to use it as long as I could. Everything had been phosphorburned grey.... and yesterday it started flashing. From the back. So I figgered it was time for a new one.

    Got a cheap flatscreen, so I went from an old 11 inch CRT to a 20 inch flatscreen. It works pretty good. I gotta monkey with the settings a bit, but it's not making my computer cry.

    But it feels like someone put a drive-in up in the computer room. "I am MONIT-OR!!!! BOW before me!!!"

    It DOES go well with the oversized scanner; but it seems weird that new computer stuff is so.... big.

      What operating system do you run? Are you still on Win98? Too bad, my company just dumped a bunch of stuff that was newer than that. Not much mind you, but newer. I probably could have sent you some hard drives and stuff. I don't even use a desktop anymore since I got my laptop. It pretty much does everything I need it to and is portable. Still use a desktop to store the majority of my big files, movies, music library, etc. Will probably invest in an external HD in the near future. Just for storage stuff. We still use some of our older computers for our offices, just for email and stuff between the corporate offices and our stores. They work fine for that.

            Windows XP. It works, but if I upgrade one more thing the system will tank. The last Search & Destroy upgrade does funny things to it. (Since so many subroutines are running now my system has a helluva time keeping up.)

            Right now I'm half-heartedly looking at a new system. The store I got the monitor says they can put a basic one together for about $400. I can MAYBE spare $500 or so right now. I'd have to build it around the scanner. THAT'S the most demanding component of my setup.

              Best Buy has a laptop on clearance right now for $400. It will easily do everything the computer you have now is running and a lot faster and it's portable. I personally don't like Vista which is the OS every PC comes with. I have two of the same laptops, one on XP and one on Vista and the XP is so much better and faster. Especially after you've used it for a while. If you have the XP disc for the OS you're running now, I suggest considering "downgrading" to XP right from the start. Others may have different views, but I have a 1 to 1 comparison between mine and my wife's and hers is no where near as quick as mine and the only difference is the OS. Just my personal view. I now go USB plugs on any of my external hardware like printers and scanners and simply bring the laptop to them when I need to access them. All 5 members of my family have a laptop and we rarely use the desktop PC anymore. With the extra $100 you can buy a 250gb external HD and have more storage than you would need for movies or music etc.

                Most definitely. I have some OLD software I like, and it works with XP. I wouldn't want to risk it with Vista. My current problem is that the audio editing program I have exceeds my system's limits. (The VIDEO one works, but not the audio. Go fig.)

                My big concern right now is that I'd need at least three USB 2 ports. My scanner won't work through a hub, and I need a good printer which I suspect won't either.

                I'd probably go with a desktop now, since I got the new monitor and all.

                  Most of the new printers and scanners I've seen will work through a usb. Unless it's a large network only printer. Plus you don't need to keep them plugged in all the time. You can keep them to the side when not in use and plug them in when you need them. My laptop only has two usb ports, so I use an expansion bar that has 4 extra ports with me, but my wifes which is the same model and options but is about 3 months newer than mine has 4,a double port on each side. That's probably becoming more common even with lower end laptops, like mine.
