Worst Movie re-makes. . .what's your take on it?

Some good points raised in the Sci-Fi Forum I thought deserved some more general discussion.

Hey! Hollywood people! Come up with an original idea for once! Quit remaking stuff! Jeez...

    Hollywood thought process:
"Duh, hey! We got computer-generated special effects and stuff now! We can make all the...duh...old movies better! We don't need to make anything new anymore! We got thousands of old movies to 'fix'! Duh, All we need is ILM, bad modern actors, a few CGI characters, and we're golden! We don't need a good script or good acting, we got computer k-splosions! Let's remake "Gone With The Wind" with some...duh...k-splosions! Who needs good acting when we've got computer-generated k-splosions?"
I watched the remake of the OMEN. . . UGGG. . .just couldn't bear it. . .painful. . . give me Gregory Peck any day!

    Hitch Hikers Guide - Ugg

Bedazzled. . .Quite enjoyed it, but preferred the 60's version (although Liz Hurley was yummy). . .it was pretty good. . .but just kinda fizzed rather than bedazzled at the end.

What did you like / hate in a remake!

        Hmmmm....

        So many to chose from....

-do the new versions of the original Star Wars count?
-does the MGM version of "Rock and Rule" count? (Which would be my pic for worst, since the original version is my all time favourite film.)
-Dukes of Hazard; a remake of something that shouldn't have happened in the first place.
        -the American Godzilla. *shudder*
-the Fox Doctor Who. *double shudder*
-I Am Legend. AND I miss the point....

This one tops the list. The runner up is Willy Wonka also by the same idiot, Tim Burton.

Like "Planet Of The Apes" or "I Am Legend", I would prefer a movie remake to be more like the book not just an attempted improvement on the original. I guess I wouldn't really do any better if I chose to remake something, but then, I would most likely only try to remake something completely lame in the first place such as "Manos: Hands of Fate". With Manos, there's nowhere to go but up. Or "Eegah". Remake those as comedies (they were pretty funny anyways) or make them actual horror films. Anything would be an improvement. I'm not saying they'd be any better, but they couldn't be much worse. Unlike the POTA remake, which looked "special effect-y" but didn't improve upon the original in any way. I just generally don't like remakes. I'd say of the ones I've seen, the "Planet Of The Apes" remake was the worst for me.

I really like it when Hollywood something original like "Terminator" or "Waterworld". I'm not saying Waterworld was good, but the concept was different and had potential.

"I prefer to remain an enigma."

OK hands down the worst...and I mean THE WORST....remake has got to be Brian De Palma's shot for shot remake of PSYCHO!!! The original film is near perfect, Top 10 all time movies, and never ever needed to be remaid. What an insult. And to remake it shot for shot? makes no sense at all.

The best remake IMHO, was the newest King Kong by Peter Jackson, it was an obvious labour of love and while I'm a huge fan of the original and stop motion in general, it needed to be remade with todays technology to introduce it to a new audience (who hopefully would be inclined to see the original 1933 version).

                    >I really like it when Hollywood something original like "Terminator" or "Waterworld".

...and even then, neither was all that original. Terminator was every second episode of the Outer Limits (just ask Elison...) and Waterworld was Mad Max on boats. But you'd hope there was a progression: that each little twist would take you one step closer to something original. You really CAN'T do something truly new. People wouldn't know how to take it. (Hence name recognition being so important; it primes the audience. AND it usually dooms a flick 'cos "it's not true to the original!!!" Double edged sword: you get the advantage of pre-expectation drawing folks in, but you also get hammered 'cos you're not producing EXACTLY what it was they'd pre-concieved your film to be.) Instead you sort of squeak new ideas into an old pattern.

...but EVENTUALLY you get something new from it.

I've always wondered which is the bigger transgression: copying something under the pretext of producing an original work, or outright remaking something.

                    >the "Planet Of The Apes" remake was the worst for me.

Okay. Outright remake it is then.

Personally I prefer the remake "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" to the original "Willy Wonka". And the new version of POTA, while not a great movie, was different enough to me not to be considered the worst remake of all time.

I have the biggest problems with TV shows being made into modern movies. Dukes, S&H, etc...

I have to agree with strechandro though, the remake of Pyscho was THE WORST. A modern shot by shot that had all the content (with the addition of a stupid masturbation scene) with a totally flat performance from the actors. Especially the Norman Bates character. All the creepy Psycho elements were totally lost and it became nothing but a modern horror flick that wasn't that horrific.

Another of the worst all time for me was the Rob Zombie remake of Halloween. They actually gave "pure evil" motivation. Ugh! Totally ruined the concept. This film was jaw-dropping aweful.

                          Truly HORRIBLE !!!

They took my favourite black comedy and made it warm and fuzzy, complete with rapper/God and happy ending. I hated that I didn't mind it, had a lot to do with Hurley and the wishes being clever I guess. I would have rather seen a modern comedy team like Cross/Odenkirk handle this subject matter, the original is brilliant.

As remakes go, the worst thing I have ever seen is Rollerball. The original's story, about corporate America gone wild, works even better today than it did then. They removed that entire plot for the remake, which makes my conspiracy senses go wild. Guess the filmakers didn't want to P off Wal-Mart.

                            Never watch it, ever.

I just LOVE the ending of the original. . .Peter Cook played it magnificently. Probably my favourite all time movie. Someone on the board I think listed it as their favourite movie not too long back as well.

Peter to Dudley "I thought I saw him nestleing in your pants!"

I didn't hate the remake either. . .although I wanted too.
