Tommy vs. The Wall (worst rock opera movie)

Was just watching The Who's Tommy last night on VH1

Before I seen it, I always thought Pink Floyd's The Wall was the worst rock opera MOVIE ever.

Bare in mind, I like both of them music-wise ......
But to me, movie premise was just embarrassingly bad.

I know at this stage both Townsend and Waters was going through their I AM GOD stage ... but really ......

Ever watch one of these and feel embarrassed someone would actually write, produce and film movies like this ?

    Thinking about it ........
I don't think LOUSY premises don't shine through so much when it's just an album.

When it's made into a movie, it's a whole nother story.

Yeah, I saw Tommy on Skinemax when I was a teen and thought it was confusing and terrible.

How about that SGT. PEPPER'S debacle?

I don't count Sgt Pepper because it's not really a "rock opera"

Pepper was just a movie written by studio exects to capitolize on the current musical movie trend .... IE Saturday Night Fever, Grease and Hair .......

I've always dug "Tommy" myself but I prefer the original album over the movie version...the movie version is a little too trippy.

First I love the music of both bands so the playing field is level before seing the films.

I LOVE THE MUSIC FROM THE WALL
The Music from Tommy is hit or miss. A lot of the tunes I like better in the Who performances of them (poinball wizard being an exception)

The movie the Wall - I really like it. I can see why some people wouldn't.

The rock opera Tommy - absolutely ridiculous. Terrible. Not watchable.
It is only topped in garbage rock films by the who's own Quadrophinia - WOW is that thing bad.

              Even the wall, though

The premise was just embarrassingly bad ........

              Kid's dad get's killed in WW2
Kid grows up --- goes nuts--- and becomes a rock-star Hitler

              Rock star Hitler ?

Well cosidering it IS a musical it makes pefect sense that he is a rock star - doesn't everyone sing in every musical?

The premise of a guy going crazy after his dad is killed in a war and grows up in totally dysfunctional surroundings seems pretty plausible to me.

actually "rock star" is pretty high up there
                      on the "charisma chart"----makes sense

Dude, it's an allegory. Water's whole point in the Wall was that being a rock star of that stature was a corrupting power trip. He hated the way fans idolized them. Plus it's a commentary on British imperial power and the tendancy to facism. The Gerald Scarfe animation is world class.

The Wall is very close to me heart. It keyed right in to my teenage anxieties, pathos and power fantasies. The Wall, Final Cut and Pros and Cons are a masterpiece trilogy of pretentious semi-autobiographical stories that led to reams of bad high school poetry. I love it.

Hmm I never though of them as a trilogy - I see your point though. I thought I was the only person on earth who bought Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking. I like it. To hear it and the Wall I think they are quite different but it and Final cut have similarities and Final Cut and Wall have similarities.
