News broke today that both Emerald City Comic Con, scheduled for next weekend, and SXSW, scheduled for later in March have been cancelled due to concerns of the spread of COVID19.
Reedpop, the organizer of ECCC (and NYCC) said they will try to reschedule later in the summer, but many prominent exhibitors and guests had already pulled out of the show next weekend, so they were cancelling for now. SXSW organizers wanted to move forward with the show, but the city of Austin declared a state of emergency and cancelled the show.
The businesses of both Seattle and Austin stand to lose a lot of revenue because of the cancellations, and I hope the many small businesses who depend on the influx of customers from the shows can survive, but I don't think these will be the only events cancelled int he coming months. It will be interesting to see how other large conventions and festivals move forward.
