"Net neutrality" is a hot topic here in Canada now, with most of the Canadian ISPs involved in throttling and upload/download limit caps. I know that I'm not thrilled with the recent actions of my provider.
This one's been going on for a while now. As I understand it the companies want more control over the net; making it like other media. Filesharing was their in. It provided the excuse needed to "crack down on pirates," an operation that would also neccessate putting in place all sorts of wonder widgets that'd facilitate better control and individual monitoring. (Like the bots certain companies put in their programs that let them monitor your system under the pretense of looking for illegal software.) The politicians would like to comply; since most of 'em are out of touch and frightened by stuff like the internet. ("It's not a truck, it's like a bunch of tubes....") And just like video games, comics and Dungeons and Dragons, it makes a good target for chest-thumping when you want to scare the parents and get some votes. ("WHO will protect the children?!?!?")
But the never push too hard, 'cos most of them voting parents ALSO use the internet and would be royally cheesed if they lost their free movies, music and porn. So the debate rages, ad infinum ad nauseum.
Problem is; the world is a big place. The net is actually quite small, and if you REALLY wanted to crack down you just have to hit the providers. Permits, licenses, regulations. It'd work good; until folks moved to a server in Russia, or Nigeria, or wherever the rules are lax.
