    Was Bitten by a Spider

The same spider keeps building a web across the walkway to my car. Needless to say I've hit it coming and going before and after work for weeks. Well, I guess I finally made him mad. Little sucker bit me twice before dropping to the ground and crawling off. I didn't know it till two large whelps popped up on the back of my head this morning.

    Question...

how do I know if it's serious? I mean it's been 24 hours and I haven't stopped breathing. They're pretty sore like a bee sting, but not unbearable.

    Will I become Spiderman?

Well,.. If your Spider-sense Starts tingling... I'd suggest you duck,.. or move outta the way,.. A Large Rino, Masked Goblin on a Glider or an OctoPus Might be heading your way. All Tell your Boss to F-off,.. it's cool,.. he might Respect you a bit better. & One other thing,... I'd avoid Red Heads at all cost. The Blonde Chick digs you for who you are.

True story: I brought my son to the shop with me late one Sunday night to turn in my time sheet. He was 5 (now 14). I thought he'd get a kick out of seeing our radiography exposure devices (gamma radiation, iridium 192). Well, the vault where we kept them had a crapload of Daddy Long Legs (a type of spider).

I turned around for just a second and when I turned back around, I caught him thrusting his hand into a web.

I asked him what he was doing (knowing full well what his answer would be).

"Well Dad," he replied "I figure these spiders are around the radiation all the time and if they bite me, I can be Spider-man."

        Gotta love those kids.

If it is a "bad" spider (brown recluse, etc.) within 48/72 hours you will get a large blister. After that, the blister will begin to necrotize and you will then form an abscess as the tissue dies around the wound. It's pretty gross and very painful, you will know...

It didn't bite you but laid it's eggs in your head. A few weeks from now the whelps will burst open with hundreds of litle spiders pouring out of it. Ok, maybe it's an old wise tale but something to think about

With friends like these who needs......right/?? I use a snakebite extractor Amazon.com: Professional Grade Snake Bite/Insect Sting Kit: Sports Outdoors
(terrible for snakebites, but great for stings and bug bites.) and suck out the spidy venom. It heals much faster, but might leave a hicky looking thing on your neck so be sure to explain it to your wife first.

Most spider bites do little harm. I've been bit a few times. It probably was NOT a brown recluse because they are usually in unlit areas and have an hourglass on it's back. You get bit by one of those got to the hospital, NOW!

On the back of the head....not anywhere near the neck wasit?....man I hope it wasn't the little known Lugosi 8 leg spider...if you have cravings for raw meat and start going around with your arm over your face , wearing a cape and muttering about "the children of the night"...then you're in trouble.....
only kidding hope everything is ok and you feel better.

If it was a brown recluse, you would know, as the spiders are quite big and brown and hairy and fast. They are like a tarantula, but smaller and evil. I've had friends get bitten by brown recluses (they are common in the south) and live to tell about it. Both required immediate hospital visits and have scars to prove it, but are OK. Imagine super MRSA.

Did the spider look anything like this?

Then you'll probably start looking like this soon:

After that, you're pretty much screwed.

If the bite still hurts after a day or so you probably need to get it checked out. Below is some info about a brown recluse bites.

                              Brown Recluse Bites:

Brown recluse spider bites often go unnoticed initially because they are usually painless bites. Occasionally, some minor burning that feels like a bee sting is noticed at the time of the bite. Symptoms usually develop two to eight hours after a bite. Keep in mind that most bites cause little tissue destruction.

                              * Victims may experience these symptoms:

o Severe pain at bite site after about four hours

                              o Severe itching

                              o Nausea

                              o Vomiting

                              o Fever

                              o Myalgias (muscle pain)

                              * Initially the bite site is mildly red and upon close inspection may reveal fang marks. Most commonly, the bite site will become firm and heal with little scaring over the next few days or weeks. Occasionally, the local reaction will be more severe with erythema and blistering, sometimes leading to a blue discoloration, and ultimately leading to a necrotic lesion and scaring. Signs may be present include:

                              o Blistering (common)

o Necrosis (death) of skin and subcutaneous fat (less common)

o Severe destructive necrotic lesions with deep wide borders (rare)
