Ed Norton (from The Honeymooners) is a Trekkie

I just picked up the color Honeymooners collection #3

Amazon.com: The Color Honeymooners Collection 3: Jackie Gleason, Art Carney: Movies TV

For that don't know, this is the series Gleason did from Miami Florida. The Honeymooners done here were remakes of the what we know now as the 1950's lost episodes (really believed to be lost back in the 60's.) with Sheila Macrae and Jane Kean as Alice and Trixie with musical numbers and dancing numbers with the June Taylor Dancers.

While they don't top the greatness of the 1950's Honeymooners they are still great and a lot of fun.

One of the fun things is the updated references.

There is a scene where Ralph is trying to butter up Alice to get some money she has hidden (she's ready for bed, with her hair in curlers). Ralph asks Norton what she looks like and he says something like " Well, with those curlers in her hair, she looks like the third Engineer on Star Trek".

It was a geek out moment for me because if it wasn't for Star Trek, I probably wouldn't have started watching The Honeymooners.

In the 80's WPIX would show The Honeymooners (classic 39) before Star Trek at Midnight. Before that, I saw the Honeymooners off and on but it didn't click with me until I started to see them all the time on the lead up to Star Trek.

Before long, the Honeymooners had me hooked as good as Star Trek.

Anyway, besides the Star Trek reference, guess who is on one of the shows?

Zira herself. Yes, Kim Hunter is on one of the shows. These shows were done in 66 or 67 so this was around the time she would be putting on the ape mask.

Also Richard Deacon (Mel from Dick Van Dyke) was on one of the shows. What was funny is that Gleason messed up his name on the roll call at the end of the show. "Robert Deacon..." Gleason said... followed by an immediate wince when he realized he screwed up the name.

      Hey!

I remember Honeymooners on WPIX in the late 70s when I lived in NYC. I remember I thought I was so cool and sneaky, b/c I was staying up late to watch Benny Hill at 11(the show everyone at school talked about) and the Honeymooners at 11:30. I had a tiny portable B&W set in my room, and I had the volume so low that I practically had to sit on top of it to hear, and of course, stifle all laughter! But it's way cool that Ed Norton is a Trekkie!

      Thanks for the memory.

I was not interested in Odd Couple at the time (now I have 3 seasons on DVD).

Do you remember how chopped up Star Trek was on WPIX?

I'm sure Odd Couple was chopped up too.

But The Honeymooners were run uncut (but time compressed to run 24 minutes) when I watched them. Before, I heard the Honeymooners were chopped up as well but the RALPH fan club successfully convinced WPIX to run Honeymooners uncut because of The Honeymooners association with New York City.

At the time, I never did notice how bad they were edited --- because that was many years before the full versions were released on VHS ...

One thing that does stand out in my mind ......
They edited out Samuel T. Cogley's second "I DEMAND IT !!!" in the later showings on PIX.

Everytime I seen this version, I always felt cheated

Ah, yes! THAT was what I called the late-night "heaven" line up.

I think I stayed up a little bit later than you guys, though, because I used to hang out long enough to watch The Twilight Zone at 1:00 AM.

Not nearly as chopped up as they are now. I watched an Odd Couple episode the other night that literally seemed to have all the jokes and funny punchlines cut out!

Whoever is doing the editing on these episodes does NOT understand the concept of judicial cutting.
