Only prob, there's nothing there to give the photo perspective.
Are those rocks the size of pebbles, basketballs or giant boulders ?
NASA should send a Mego on every mission...
Shoot it out and take their photos with the Mego in it.
Then we can see proper perspectiveComment

Also, with gas prices the way they are --- and with the current economy...
Why are they wasting money sending this junk to other planets ?
The price of this mission could have fed many hungry familys
Will this mission really prove anything ... other then the fact the US gov still wastes money left and right.Comment

great stuff.....we should be there already...lol...we've been doing the "Viking" bit since the 70's....lets send a monkey or a horse or something...lol...maybe someone could sneak a megomuseum card in the next mission...lolENGLISH AND DAMN PROUD OF ITBritish by birth....English by the grace of God.
Yes Jamie...it is big isn't it....

Congradulations to NASA. It is always wonderful when a space mission is successful since it is always a touch and go situation. I personally think the importance of space exploration is twofold, the knowledge gained and the fact it shows what humans can accomplish when they are not robbing, raping, and killing one another! It is a triumph of the spirit not only for the USA, but for the whole world. Peoples from many countries work on these projects. NASA has a small budget, that keeps getting smaller! The cost of these projects is nothing compared to the billions of dollars that are spent on an illegal war in Iraq or the money used to bail out evil companies like Enron! So if your looking for money to feed hungry families look no further!
As for black and white photos, you have to remember the information sent back from Mars is sent back in binary code, 101011001! When the computers on Earth get the information they arrange it into photos. They later get color corrected so they get the most accurate image possible, but it takes some time!
Since weight and cost are always factors against NASA, they don't always get to put everything they want into missions. One of the biggest enemies of space exploration is our own planet. It takes alot of energy to brake free of the Earth's gravity! In fact Phoenix was assembled from a bunch of parts from mothballed projects. Shows recycling does work! They could have spent alot more money then they did.
This is not ment to be political in anyway. It is my own personal feeling on the subject and if I offended anyone I apologize in advance.

Sigh just checked to news a bit more. Looks like this is a stationary lander.
Whats up with these guys? Lets dig in place to see if we can find permafrost.
Umm what about all those pics from orbit that have white stuff on the polar caps. Gee I thinks thats a real good place to find some actual water.
If there is life on Mars they must be laughing their (Whatever they use for heads ) off.
Its like someone sending probes to the most godforesaken, barren, glacier or desert on earth looking for life.Lo there do I see my Father.
Lo there do I see my Mother and my Sisters and my Brothers.
Lo there do I see the line of my people back to the begining.
Lo they do call me.
They bid me take my place among them.
In the halls of Valhalla where the brave may live forever.Comment

I think it's great that the mission suceeded. I do think it's odd they didn't do another lander near the poles. It was explained that the Pheonix lander was made from spare parts from other probes. Kudos to NASA for doing that instead of spending money on all new components. Still they would have spare parts on the rovers too so again, why not a rover?
Mike space exploration is important and yes it's hard to justify at times. Sending probes to other planets is comparable to Columbus discovering the New World, Marco Polo going to China, or Lewis & Clark exploring North America. It's just that Space Exploration is so expensive due to the nature of it.
I would like to point out that from 1979 to 1989 the NASA budget hovered at only 1% compared to othe federal orgainizations. They didn't get any substantial increases for years and had to do amazing things with less. The US goverment has left people without food or shelter in it's past and continues to do so at times. It has nothing to do with NASA.Comment
