Man, talk about the passing of a cultural touchstone. You have to wonder just how many people's lives that man has influenced/changed since he launched PLAYBOY way back in the day. RIP, Hef, prayers for comfort and peace to your family, friends and many fans all over the world.

Never a Playboy reader (more of a "Juggs" man) but Hefner himself did have an impact on me as a teen. I forget where i read it but it mentioned how he reinvented himself in high school, just pushed forward by calling himself "Hef" and adopting the persona and people took to him. That really works and it works well.

Also, his comics geekery is well known, he had a tremendous impact on the world. I still believe that he inspired the 1966 Batman TV series.

^Most definitely. Him showing the serials at the mansion and the Playboy clubs made it an "in" thing, which made Hollywood notice.

Now, whether Bob Kane was ever there is open to debate...and probably a load of bunk like most of his stories, unfortunately.

To get slightly off topic, I think the Kane hate borders on hyperbole these days, thanks to efforts to canonize Bill Finger. He was a dink for sure but Mein Gott, it's yellow journalism.

Don't want to derail this thread, but yeah, folks go overboard with it for sure, like any fan hate. But he really did set himself up for it with his fervent denials of things that are now known as fact.

Yeah, a lot of what he did is indefensible but it was also really rampant in the comic strip industry. I just find fans boil it down to "Him evil, him good guy" and honestly, Finger got screwed but I'm not sure halo is appropriate.

Jason, my podcast partner worked at the mansion for quite a while. He'd call me from it and tell me what was on the walls etc. The impression i got of Hefner was a less creepy Michael Jackson, he had a passion for kid's stuff and arcade games etc but was obviously a man's man and an intellectual.
