I also caught a midnight showing early this morning, and thought it was generally well done. There are two scenes that I found to be absolutely friggin' ridiculous however--but I'll keep that to myself for those who haven't seen it. It's probably the worst of the 4 movies, but not by much really. I wouldn't disagree too strongly with those saying it's better than Temple of Doom. A good popcorn flick--just don't go into it thinking about how we've waited twenty years for this--because no movie can live up to those sorts of expectations. I wouldn't be surprised if two more movies with Harrison playing a secondary role are coming. -
Yes, you are exactly right! I should have been more clear and stated a lame-o Deus ex machina plot device. I'm not opposed to all movies that have employed it (kind of the point of the Ten Commandments). An example of bad for me was The Abyss; a great movie until every problem was solved by a giant soap dish floating up and saving all parties.

Well, all of the IJ films have deus ex machina endings, literally "the god in the machine" in the case of Raiders. The question is how well-integrated the ending is into the preceding two hours. In the case of Crystal Skull, I'd say that the climax is forecasted well in advance, and does not seem to come out of nowhere with little or no story-based logic, as most d-e-m's do.
I enjoyed the movie mostly for its characters and for its sense of adventure and fun, which are firmly and entertainingly based on the 80s trilogy. The first 2/3 of the film is pure dynamite, with laughs and gasps and intrigue to spare. The last 1/3, not so much. It loses its energy and its sense of fun as the characters reach the final locale. But the climax is kinda neat, even if it doesn't have the deeper meanings or importance of the other three movies, and in the end is just another sci-fi/fantasy pulp pastiche.Leave a comment:

I saw the midnight showing last night. My initial reaction is a little disappointment. I realize that some of this might be the huge expectations I couldn't help but get for the movie so I'm going to wait a little while and see it again and see how I feel.
I thought Ford did a great job as an older (and crankier) Indy and the rest of the cast did fine as well. Some of the stunts were a little too over the top (I'm thinking of the Mutt and the monkees scene in particular) but I could live with that. The sci-fi ending is what really bummed me out, however.
Not a bad film by any means, but probably the weakest of the 4.Leave a comment:

Not living up to the near 20-year-wait or being only the third-best (or second worst) in the series, I can believe, but I can't see that too many people will say it is awful.Leave a comment:

I had a friend who works in Vegas email me today.. he and some co-workers went to a midnite showing last nite..
He said it was awful. He fell asleep for 10 minutes in the middle of it.Leave a comment:

Did hearing "The Raiders March" in a theater make you feel like a kid again? (That's kind of what I am looking forward to)Leave a comment:

I didn't care for Doom Either... I hope to take the Boy on Sat.

New Indy movie
Just got back 9:30am showing only 5 people at the movie.
It was a lot of fun. Was it great, no, but it was a good fun film.
I think it up held the indy movies.
It was the 3rd best of the four films I think.
1- Raiders
2- Last crusade
3- Scull
4- Doom
I'd see it again.Tags: None
