    Remember the Book Mobile ...?

Living in the sticks it seemed like a big deal when the book mobile came.

It was like a travelling circus+wonderland --- until you went inside.

That's when you realized --- hey, this truck is filled with books and it don't interest me whatsoever.

The Book Mobile was the perfect example of something that sounds good -- until you experience it

Nope we never had that although we did have RIF (Reading is Fundamental) come to our school once when I was in 4th or 5th grade.

We had RIF every year in grade school... They'd also have poster drawing contests where if yours was chosen as a winner, you'd get to pick an extra book or two...

I lived in rural north Alabama as a kid and I remember the book mobile! Before my town had a library they came all the time. I can remember them parking at the Piggly Wiggly all day for people to check out books. I loved reading and so did my mom so we thought it was exciting.

I think that the book mobile was a great idea for small communities that didn't have a local library. Books and reading are important, and in the pre-internet days especially, something like this would be very valuable.

They didn't have much that I was into. I think they showed up mostly around summer vacation and around that time I really wasn't into reading.

My wife is a librarian, and one of her co-workers' jobs is to drive the Bookmobile. She still goes around to the smaller communities out in the county, as well as daycares and pre-schools, etc.

The bookmobile was one of the highlights of my life as a kid! I always found great books on movie monsters, ghost stories, Hardy Boys mysteries...I couldn't get enough!
