James Gunn penning script for TV reboot of Starsky & Hutch

    According to CBR....

    http://www.cbr.com/james-gunn-starsk...B-P&view=lista

He just signed on to pen the script and may direct if his schedule allows. He will also serve as executive producer for the series in the works at Sony Television. Details are sparse, but he described it as an hour long character driven procedural.

JMO but a Starsky and Hutch reboot today won't get much attention, trying to reboot 70's tv show cop dramas in this day in age is grasping at straws. But in saying that, I think if they did a reboot of Streets of San Francisco, that would be something more interesting.

Oh yeah..that'll work 'cos the movie was so popular. Please leave our classics alone!

The movie was done by an entirely different studio, Warner Brothers has the movie rights, but Sony still holds the TV rights for the original show and they are behind the TV show. Gunn seems to be playing straight, and I hope if he does any kind of period piece with it, he can music as integral tot he identity fo the show as he did with Guardians. I don't have a lot of hope for this, but I am willing to wait and see before condemning it outright. Gunn at least has a good track record (which is more than I can say about anyone involved with the movie. It seems that anyone reviving these old shows into movies is trying to go the farce root (Starsky & Hutch, CHiPs, etc.) because they don't see a way to play the dramas straight. Gunn seems to be doing otherwise. We'll see. If could be a turd, but but could end up being decent.

The other thing to remember, as much as we like to think of these as our classics, we have no ownership of these things. They are intellectual properties that will be exploited by their owners. In this case, I'd rather see someone try to do a straight crime drama than treat it as a farce when they do. If they are going to exploit them (and they will) I would rather those involved work to find the core of what made it work when it did, rather than as an artifact of the past to play for cheap laughs.

The movie was an interesting failure, I left the theater wondering if it's possible to make this work at all.

^I know it's an unpopular opinion, but I liked the movie. I vaguely recall watching the show at a very young age, and having the Corgi Jr. of the Torino. That's about it. So I had nostalgia for the trappings, if not the show itself. Maybe that's why it worked for me, and not for die hards?

I like the show but I'm all for a comedy remake, the reason i thought it failed is it wasn't very funny. Which was weird considering it was from the director of "Old School" and featured the three principles. I guess i had higher hopes.

I certainly wasn't sitting there going "HOW DARE THEY! THIS IS SACRILEGE!"

I think if they had swapped Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn's roles,it might have worked better.

^Maybe, but they played Starsky as a wound-up, ordered type in a lot of ways, and I think that's beyond Vaughn's usual persona.

I guess I'm use to Wilson and Vaughn being paired together.
