Former Military Men, what rank were you?

I served 4 and a half years in the Air Force (got involuntarily extended) and came out with the rank of Staff Sargent. The is E-5 for you guys who were in other branches. I was a security policeman and I guarded planes, buildings, missile silos and many other secure areas. I traveled to Germany, Spain, England, Panama, Italy and Saudi Arabia while in. I seriously considered staying but was recently married and didn't want my wife enduring the lifestyle.

Oh ya Mike, what ships did you serve on? Where were you stationed and what fleets did you command? Please don't make a joke of my post.

E-4 Specialist in the Louisiana National Guard.

I hated the National Guard for the weekends but loved it for the active duty I did. As a MP, units all over the state would call our unit asking for volunteers to go with them on their two week training.

I did it non-stop for two summers (my summer job). At the end of the second summer, the MP Companies in Panama called asking for a hand full of volunteers to help relieve the around the clock guard duty the MP's were pulling down there. I was 20 years old, living in a hotel in downtown Panama, over looking the Pacific Ocean, living the big life.

I was there for three months, and just a few months later, the "Helping Hand" offensive took place. Not too many people know that the main battle took place on a golf course, Fort Amadore.

A couple years later, the MP Company in New Orleans was activated for "Desert Shield" and called our unit for volunteers because of their lack of people. Twelve of us volunteered and landed in Saudi Arabia on Febuary 8th, two weeks after "Desert Storm" started. We were there for five months. We got home and were excused from the guard for 6 months.

I had alittle over a year left in the guard, thought about re-upping, but decided I did all I could do in the guard.

I was a Petty Officer Second Class (E5) in the US Navy. I got out in July of 1996 and would have taken the E6 test that September (had I stayed in).

I was in Signals Intelligence and served aboard numerous Surface Combatants. I was never permanently assigned to one, but got sent when the sending was good.

I served in Japan, the Persian Gulf (two tours, one with Commander US Naval Forces Central Command in Bahrain, one aboard USS Hewitt), and visited a lot of places I never dreamed I would see.

My last tour was at a stinking training command and I hated every minute of it....(boring hearing dudes supposing what "it" would be like when I knew what "it" was like, I suppose).

I did just under 6 years in the Army. I was a Military Policeman and got out as a corporal (E-4 lateral). Of course the month after I got out the MP promotion points dropped and I would have made Sergeant (E-5). The Army promotion system was truly a frustrating one.

Did not serve in the military, but grew up in a military home.

My father retired after 28 years in the Marine Corps. He was an E-9, Master Gunnery Sgt. I loved going to work with him and hearing the guys call him "TOP"

They wanted him to become an officer - 3 times he declined - they finally told him he had to retire if he would not promote. He loved being an enlisted man and did not want to be an officer...so he left the corp.

I never served in the military due to various medical reasons. Back in the day they didn't give waviers as easily as they do today! My mom served as a nurse in what they use to call the WACS. She almost went to Vietnam! I'm not sure of her rank. So if you say my momma wears combat boots, I say damn right I have alot of friends who were or are in the military. So I applaud anyone who has served or is serving. You folks make our way of life possible
