So, with both our kids at different summer camps this week, Cindy and I had the rare opportunity to go to the movies on an actual date. We pondered seeing Wonder Woman again, and I floated the idea of The Mummy (which Cindy nixed due to all the horrible reviews and tepid audience response, and I don't blame her), but we ended up going with her first pick: Baby Driver.

This is the first non-kiddie, non-super hero movie I've watched in a theater in YEARS. And it's a damn fine movie! I went in knowing basically nothing other than the driver was a young baby-faced guy, and it had Jamie Fox in it.

Turns out this movie is written and directed by Edgar Wright, so it's top-notch in those departments, and has an incredible cast including Kevin Spacey and Jon Hamm. Not to mention Netflix's Punisher Jon Berthnal and the actress from the recent live-action Cinderella, Lilly James.

In a summer full of apparently dumb action movies, this one is smart, witty, and it takes twists and turns you NEVER see coming. It's got plenty of high-speed action, but takes time to establish the characters, including Baby himself, played by Ansel Elgort, who I think we're going to be seeing a LOT more of.

In other words, I, like apparently every critic out there (it's 98% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes), highly recommend this movie!!! I think it's going to be the sleeper hit of the summer...at least it deserves to be anyhow!

Never heard of the movie until about a month ago, then saw the trailers, it has that Italian Job vibe to it.

This seems to be the anti-Fast and the Furious version...

I'm in...I'll check it out...

I saw the end of one trailer a few months back, and it didn't really register. I'm glad Cindy looked into it, because we're both still talking about it today. Sign of a good movie!

It's a Peter Criss song from KISS' 1976 album Rock and Roll Over.

Great movie & great soundtrack. I recommend it. It has a lot of violence and a fair amount of profanity, but not much in the way of sex & drugs...don't remember if there was drinking or smoking. We took the kids (15 & mature 12) and didn't regret it. It's strong enough cinema that it outweighs the naughty bits, IMO.

^Glad you guys liked it! Yeah, there are some drug references, but it's not onscreen, and you'd pass over it if you weren't paying really close attention to the dialog.

It's doing really well against all the big blockbusters, and proportionately to it's budget, outdoing many of them at the box office.

Just saw it today...I was amazingly and surprisingly shocked how much I loved Baby Driver...next to Wonder Woman, it's my favorite movie of the year so far, wow...I almost passed it, was going to wait for Redbox, but glad I went, awesome movie.

I'm a big Edgar Wright fan and I went right when it opened - and I never ever see movies within the opening week. I truly expected to love it, but I honestly didn't.

Overall, perfectly fun summer movie - maybe I just hyped it up too much in my mind. Parts were amazing, some of it felt a bit like it was trying for too many 90s crime movie cliches. The music was great, as advertised. I dunno. I just couldn't 100% get into it the way I wanted to. Maybe I just didn't really get the main character? I felt the same way about "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World".

I'm glad you guys loved it though.
