Anyone hear the Marine cap & gown story ?

It all over the news this morning.

Apparently a marine is graduating from high school.

It looks like he joined the marines at 17 (which is on the level)

Now at his high school graduation he refuses to wear the cap and gown, chosing to wear his marine dress uniform instead.

The school officials told him no -- he must wear the cap & gown.

    So he's fighting it.........

    --------

Me, I can't side in with the kid

I think if he's a marine he should do what he's told by his superiors (no matter if they're civilian or military.

Even vets are siding in with the school

    What do you think ?

YOU have a good point T1, as a Marine he should follow orders.

My only gripe with this whole story is after the school board caught wind of his plan to wear his dress blues, they then voted on a rule to stop it. Kinda like being on double secret probation and not knowing it.

Think B.A. Where did you hide the Megos?

When I graduated from U.S. Army Airborne School at Ft. Benning, GA in 1985, I wanted to wear my Action Jackson coveralls and grow a beard, but they wouldn't let me. I thought it wasn't fair. They also wouldn't let me jump with my own orange plastic parachute kit.

I think it's appropriate to wear the cap and gown unless rules of military dress would say otherwise.

If they don't stick with the policy, then it opens up the door to wear whatever you want.

I don't really know what the code of military dress is (when to wear it and when not). I'm sure the student is proud to be a Marine and I have to admit that seeing any man or woman in dress military uniform looks sharp but there is a time and place for everything.

Why can't he do both? I mean wear his Marine stuff beneath his robe and cap. You only have that on for pictures and the stupid ceremony anyway, then he could run around in his Dress Blues, and show off to everyone that he is proud to be a Marine, even though everyone already knows that he is proud to be a Marine. I think he simply want attention and should follow orders like a good boy..

I think this kid is making himself look bad in front of the Corps

            I'm assuming he's 18 or 19 now.

He was only in the Corps for a year-ish

When it's time for him to be stationed, would anyone in their right mind want to be his commanding officer ?

            He's a boat rocker

You watch, the Marines will find a ANY reason to boot him out pretty fast.

Has this rule changed since then? You could certainly sign up and get the wheels in motion while in HS but you didn't get your uniforms until you were physically in Basic Training

It was still like that up to the mid 90's when my nephew joined the Navy.
They let him join at 17, but he couldn't do bootcamp until he was 18 and had his High School diploma.
Before that, all they gave him was a trucker style hat that said US NAVY.

He's most likely a reservist. Even back when I graduated in 1982 we had a few guys like this. They'd join up at 17, got to basic in the summer between jr. & sr. year, then finish out the sr. year and go to AIT/tech school/whatever-you call it. Recruiters used to call it "split training option."

I doubt he's an active duty marine, unless there are new rules or ways of doing things that I don't know about.

Thats against military protocol. No other outfit may be orn over a dress uniform

Sounds like he hasn't learnt much in the marines if you ask me....the guy is obviously proud to wear the uniform (and kudos to him for it), But the marines have their own passing out parade with which he can wear his uniform with pride. He should wear the cap and gown as stated in school's instruction (something you need to be able to heed as a military member), as this not only disrespects the school but also the marines...

So if I want to wear my Star Trek uniform or stormtrooper armour to grad I should be allowed to? Lame.

Who really cares,if it's such a big deal to the school, then just don't let him walk

Schools could be stupid sometimes though, for my prom a bunch of us wanted to wear our JROTC uniforms and we were told not to
