Today I got my very first reading glasses

i am 80% blind in 1 eye, from a birth defect.

they say they can do nothing for me... ? but i go along every 5 years or so to see if they have new technology or can see any improvements, but nothing as yet

what i have is called baby vision, i never had a problems or lost my sight it just didnt develop from a baby to now, so im one of the rare ones that can see what a baby sees, which trust me is not very much lol, but its only in 1 eye, i dont need glasses on my good eye but i used to get terrible headaches from being on the laptop for 8-10 hours a day

my head would be pounding and i would have trouble sleeping and have a nasty mood about me, so about 5 years ago i wnet to the optician and they sorted me out a pair, in the one side its just normal glass as they cant amplify the vision it makes no difference i cant see through it even with a telescope it makes no difference lol
the best thing about it is that i dont know any different, this is how ive always been, and i dont let it stop me from doing anything, however i am very consious of my good eye, if i get bumped or knocked in the face im always worried about my good eye if i lost that i would be registered blind.

sadly the one thing it stopped me from being a potential pro soccer player, my grandfather played pro soccer for many teams and i followed, but i was deemed unfit, not through the boy but through the lack of vision in 1 eye. unfair!

any ways my next thing that bugs me is that i dont need glasses really only for 1 eye but id look a bit stoopid walking round with 1 eyed glasses lol... but i went along to see if i could get lazer correction, they turned me away because i only have one good eye to work on yet the offer said from £399 per eye!

what they said is if something went wrong with the proceedure i would be left registered blind... so that tells me a lot about the confidence in there practice, how can they quote you per eye, but someone with 1 eye cant get it done... i was going to say "seen" too lol

I had 20/20 vision all the way into my early 20's and then my eyes went bad.

The doctor thought it was part heredity and because of my profession as a CPA, I am used to not only looking at a computer screen most of the time but accountants generally write very small because they are very verbose and try to fit a lot of words into a small amount of space.

I am near sighted and started with the lowest prescription available but egads, every time I went to my doctor my prescription was doubling. It has finally leveled off for the past 5 or 6 years. I also switched to contacts about 6 years ago. I don't know my vision but my prescription is -3.50 which is pretty bad (worse than my wife who has been wearing glasses and contacts most of her life). I haven't had problems with close up vision at all (knock on wood) but just recently my wife had to purchase reading glasses herself since she is having trouble seeing.

Yeah I'm a 4 eyes

I have Epiretinal Syndrome which means that one of my eyes the lens
inside is coming away from the front of my eye...it's not to bad at the moment
but it might get worse with age...there is an operation but it only has a 50%
success rate. The operation would mean cutting in to my eye and expanding
a balloon inside my eye to try to push the lens back....

So one of my eyes is long sited and the other is short sited.
I think I have one of David Bowie's eyes.

Anyway I don't mind wearing glasses...I think they make my look pretty ???

My daughter contracted had something similar happen.

Apparently there is a bacteria that is found on most meat that doesn't go away with cooking. About 80% of the U.S. population has it in their system but most immune systems are resistant to it. Two years ago, my daughter got it and we never knew it because there really are no symptoms.

Unfortunately, it infected her eye (again she didn't notice), her body's immune system kicked in and killed the bacteria but left scar tissue that has left her essentially blind in one eye (she can see peripherally but that's it).

The strange thing is she never noticed. Her good eye is better than 20/20 and when she has both eyes open, it appears to her that she can see out of both eyes. This problem was only caught two years ago through a routine eye exam and there is no treatment for it.

She plays soccer and I am making her wear Rec Specs to protect her other eye just in case some freak accident occurred while playing which would leave her permanantly blind.

She plays fine and a lot of girls are wearing them in lieu of glasses but hers has no prescription. Her main issue is getting over feeling self conscious.

Personally, I think they look good on her and it makes me feel comfortable when she is playing sports but being 11 years old, she feels geeky.

I feel your pain I have 20/20 vision and just this past year one day I went to read the paper and bang my arms weren't long enough!

Actually some days are worse then others. It is really the dark that effects me the worst, so reading a menu in a restaurant is usually a problem. I hate reading glasses and I never remember to bring them with me.

BTW - my eye doctor told me to only use them when I absolutely need them, since your eye muscle can get weaker and more dependent on the glasses.

I think it is harder for people that have had 20/20 all their life to get reading glasses.

My wife and I are in our early 40's... we both had to go get glasses this past summer. Turns out we make a great pair... she's near-sighted and I'm far-sighted.

Usually when you hit your 40's your eyes start to change shape. You lose you close up vision cause of this. I can see perfect far away but reading the paper forget it now unless I hold it as far away as possible. I just go with the readers.

Yes that is presbyopia-it is the natural degeneration of the eye,well the eye loosing its elasticity anyway.

hey mate i support you there, how on earth ive managed to go living in my life for 35 years and not have damaged my good eye is beyond me, i only am concious about it now, all those boyhood years, throwing things at each other, climbing trees, swimming all that good stuff, i would have thought i could have damaged my good eye at any time, it worries me now thinking back.

but i think your doing the right thing there, tell her its cool to wear those, edgar davids one of the worlds former great players wore those protectors... point out that if she dont think its that cool to wear them... but it wouldnt be very cool if she lost her vision thats not cool at all

so what she is doing now is very cool

my gramps was a pro soccer player here in uk, he played for norwich city, spurs, barry town, and on the training staff at cardiff.
i followed by playing footy in my youth and we didnt have any protection then ! but when i got older i could not fullfull a dream to be a pro player as i was unfit from my sight defect... it dont even effect my ability but its like i couldnt be a boxer as i would not see a shot coming, it would be unfair advantage.

these days its probably allowed but when i was a teen i got turned down because of it
