I always had perfect 20/20 vision, and I still see pretty darn excellent...it's only the close-up stuff that has slowly over the years been deteriorating (ever so slightly), it's just age.
My sister is like you though, Mike, she's younger than me, and has always had bad eyesight, she needs glasses for both distance and close ups.
I have to wear contacts because I can't stand glasses...but they are for nearsightedness and not for reading. One of my classmates in elementary school used to wear coke bottle glasses so thick that his eyes looked like goldfish in a bowl. One day he slipped on a stair tread and whammed the back of his head on a metal bannister. I think it knocked him out for a few seconds. It must have done something to him, because from that day forward, he never needed glasses. I'm sure he saw stars before things cleared up for him.
Usually when you hit your 40's your eyes start to change shape. You lose you close up vision cause of this. I can see perfect far away but reading the paper forget it now unless I hold it as far away as posible. I just go with the readers.
