Australian Ebay changes - coming to you soon...

Well the first of the dramatic ebay changes on ebay.com.au hit yesterday, and it's not pretty for some. Australia is apparently being used as a test market for the rest of the world, this is what awaits all who buy and sell on ebay...

    New Rules

    1. Each multiple feedback from other members is now counted as 1 towards your feedback score, retrospectively from yesterday. My feedback jumped 30 or so overnight, some people went up hundreds.

    2. This is a killer, all neutral feedbacks have now been retrospectively scored as negatives, leaving thousands of users who had 100% feedback yesteday with 99%, 98% or lower today. Significancantly if you drop below 98% you are no longer eligible for full Paypal Seller protection, a nice little move by the 'bay, reducing their liability by millions overnight.

    3. Sellers can no longer leave Negative or Neutral feedback for buyers. I kid you not. And as of today, when leaving feedback a little prompt comes up saying "Be honest when leaving feedback, sellers can't leave negatives or neutrals so you don't have to worry about unfair retaliatory feedback" or words to that effect, if that's not encouraging the buyer to be harsh in their feedback I don't know what is.

4.As of next month, the only payment methods accepted on ebay.com.au will be Paypal or Cash On Delivery. You read that right. No cash, no direct deposit, internet banking, money orders, cheques or anything, just the payment system owned by Ebay themselves.

The community boards are going nuts down here, check it out.

This is all apparently in an effort to make buying and selling safer on ebay.

Of course I can understand the reasons why they have made the changes, it's just incredibly frustrating to have all of these restrictions placed upon the 99% of ebay users who do the right thing, all to protect the 1% of buyers who can't see a red flag when it's waved in front of their face by the 1% of sellers who set out to cheat them.

    Thoughts?

    Stupid - Stupid -Stupid !!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like eBay is cashing out ....

They're going to lose half their sellers --- and if they do, the buyers will be next --- because there wont be any sellers left.

I think Reagan called it "the trickle down effect"

This really bites the big one! So i don't get it,what happens if the buyer doesn't send the payment? could you neg him then? I'm guessing that's why they are doing the paypal only thing, that way they can track if the buyer sent the payment

I won't sweat it anymore,I'll just use my account to buy and open a new one under my wife or brothers name to sell

They're destroying themselves from within. At this rate it won't be long before a new player steps up and takes over eBay's place as the number one online auction house

The no money order thing is nuts. I know of one head caster/suit maker that sells on ebay and only takes MO's.

I believe numbers 1-3 will also be taking place on ebay over here on May 19th. That ought to be great fun for sellers. They can't do #4 in the US (yet at least) even though I'm sure they would love to, due to laws prohibiting it. I don't know about other countries though, I guess they are testing in Australia and will be watching very carefully.

General opinion on the ebay discussion boards is that ebay is trying to force out the small sellers with all these crazy new regulations that will make it very difficult for many sellers to continue. They really don't want them there anymore and are trying to get away from the whole "flea market" feeling of the place. It sucks because it's all the small "cleaning out the garage" sellers that helped build them to where they are today.

Yes it's going to be grimm in for us on the US ebay come the 19. If you login now to ebay.Austraila and look yourself up you will see you your Percentages will look on the 19th.

Ebay seems to be going the way of the "flea market". Where I am the "flea markets" are all full up with Chinese dollar store crap, just like ebay soon will be. F'm !

One of the biggest things that **** me off is past neutrals turning into negatives.

I just checked out my ID on eb-***.aus and suddenly my 100% went to 99% because of one lousy neutral -- that I didn't deserve to begin with

I'm thinking about shorting Ebay stock....seriously.

They are literally starting to implode and will ultimately do so on their own. I belong to a couple of communities and I am definitely seeing a shift of people leaving Ebay and selling their wares over on specialized boards circumventing Ebay altogether.

This will just cause more people to move away and give an opportunity for other online auction houses to open shop. Ebay is too comfortable and arrogant right now but I think they have finally done themselves in this time.

I read over on the ebay forums that a lot of sellers are giving negatives to all their buyers (even good buyers) in protest that they wont be able to leave feedback soon.
Not sure if it will work, and it is mean --- but drastic steps need to be taken to throw a money wrench in the works.

Yeah I think it might get a bit crazy before it all settles down again, that's a hell of way to protest!

perhaps another boycott is on the cards

we need publicity and plenty of coverage, spread tha word ya heard tha nerd

someone set a date and spread it, boycott. boycott

leaving everyone a neg is a good 1, yeah real harsh but good.

and yes someone can leave you a negative if they dont pay! i had it, they never paid and never disputed that they didnt pay, they had no intension... i left them a retaliation negative, ebay refused to remove both.

i say boycott ebay june 1st for a week, gives us a bit of time to spread it round

I've heard that the feedback forum on ebay has some buyers posting that they are getting excited and can't wait to start slamming sellers with negatives. I think things might get ugly for a while. I hope it gets so bad that ebay actually realizes what a big mistake these changes are, but that's probably wishful thinking, they are too arrogant and really don't seem to care.
