health advise regarding high blood pressure

wondered if anyone here had any knowledge ,first hand or other wise regarding my blood pressure problem
i was rushed into the emergency room back in 2008 with bp of 229 over 189 ,spent time in coronary care ward and was diagnosed with malignant hypertension ,due to tests they performed while i was confined ,that it had been this way for 6 years before i was taken to hospital ,via the scaring to the back of my eyes my heart and kidneys lungs and liver. i suffer and am affected at times by* the attendant symptoms associated with* Hypertension Stage 3 / Hypertensive crisis, almost constant headaches ,dizziness ,blurred vision, mental confusion loss of consciousness* and* recently ive started having* nose bleeds* *
i was prescribed 2 types of bp tablet ,

i recently had a medical and my bp was recorded on meds at 200 over 129 ,
my last medicals were recorded at 2010 ...180 over 112

    and 2013 ...189 over 120

this suggests to me that my condition is deteriorating despite the meds . every thing ive read tells me that my bp for a man at 59 should be in the ballpark of 140 over 100 or ideally 110 over 80

and that anything over 180 over 120 is hyperventive crisis and in danger of a stroke or heart attack

im adopted so have little knowledge of my family medical history ,other than my mothers brother died at 59 of a massive heart attack ,
put his overalls on in the living room walking to go outside ,bang stone dead on the kitchen step
and it wasn't a big house ,so must have come on sudden

id be a lying if i said this didn't worry me

im also being medicated for stress and depression ,

i recently had a incident and was attended by a off duty paramedic first responder ,my eldest sons mother ,she took my bp at 200 over 129 ,but said it was only a little high and not to worry but to see my doctor when available ,im concerned that she was trying not to alarm me,

the health care professional at my last medical seemed shocked at the reading but offered no advise with regard to medical attention

so im bemused about what my bp reading means for my future ,is it bad and i should push for more medical help or is it just slightly higher than it should be

    any help or insight appreciated

Those numbers are too high. You need to be tracking your blood pressure daily and keeping a diary of those numbers. If you can not achieve at minimum 140/90 or lower, then you need to tell your doctor and he needs to prescribe you meds to get you there. You should have a family doctor monitoring this. 200/129 is NOT a little high, it's way high. Do not mess with your heart buddy. If you have numbers like that right now, please seek medical attention today. Hypertensive headaches and nose bleeds are signs that your arteries are under stress. I lost my brother to this because he didn't manage his blood pressure and tried to self-medicate with other methods. Get on a treatment plan that monitors your BP and you will be back on the road to recovery. People can live long and normal lives with meds to control their blood pressure. The main thing is staying on it.

agreed. you need to get on meds to control that pronto. that is way too high. I don't know you, but are you overweight? carrying a lot of extra weight will also affect your blood pressure in a negative way. Once on the proper meds, diet and exercise and the key to helping to control it, my friend

hey thanks tom ,thanks for the advise and im so sorry for your loss ,i always wanted a brother and can only imagine the hurt and loss of losing one ,i feel for you mate

ive been on meds since 2008 after being discharged from hospital ,amlodipine and amias for bp and more recently mirtazapine for depression and anxiety

so this is why im confused about my high readings ,as i wonder how bad they would be if i wasnt on them ,assuming they are working to bring my bp down
again many thanks and sorry for your loss

Others are right that you need to get your doctor's help asap. Make certain your doc knows all the meds you are taking, even if you're taking supplements of any kinds of vitamins. the longer you go with blood pressure that high the more wear and tear on your heart it is and will just leave more and more scaring. Have your kidneys checked also. Are you retaining fluid anywhere? Around your ankles or legs and so on? If you are then you could (just saying maybe) have congestive heart failure. Be careful and get checked out please. Those numbers are way way too high. Like I mentioned get those kidneys checked too. High blood pressure effects those in a very severe way. If you're overweight or just eating unhealthy get your doc to recommend a nutritionist. Are you diabetic? Stay away from any caffeine big time! You've got time to take control of this but it's something you don't want to put off even for a week. We want you around here for a long long time! Wishing you all the best!

Everything said here is spot on. Medical diagnosis is priority one.

My quick recommendation is cinnamon. It's a natural for lowering blood pressure.

A healthy diet and lifestyle can help lower your blood pressure. This article looks at the scientific research behind 10 spices and herbs that may help.

hey guys thank you so much for the input ,its literally very heart warming ,pun intended ,to get such a concerned response from so many in the community ,and i now feel reassured to approach my doctor without feeling im wasting his time

marvel mania yeah i do have swollen ankles but if i wear socks ,the swelling stays above the sock line ,i rarely wear socks ,so that seems conclusive to what your saying about my heart not pumping correctly and my kidneys not functioning to their full potential

daz and hedrap thanks for the tips and recipes ,ill give them a closer look
                again heartfelt ,
there i go again with the puns lol
thanks for all your concern and replies

Another thing to do is cut down on the salt. Sodium is a big no-no for high blood pressure. Potassium is another thing that will help lower your bp.

Before taking any potassium supplements check with your doc first. My mother was taking some blood pressure meds that helped her get rid of excess fluid and she needed a potassium supplement since she was peeing all the time but then her doc changed her meds to Lisinopril, another blood pressure med and it increases the potassium levels alone so she had to stop the extra potassium she was taking. Just check and ask your doc about everything you need according to the meds you're on or what they change you to. You're never wasting a doctor's time if you have any health concerns!!!! Jwyblejr is right, salt is your #1 enemy! Sugar too is very bad for the heart and kidneys.

                      This ^^^^^

Forgive me, but I don't think you answered his question regarding if you are overweight, type of diet, etc...if you are overweight, you can definitely lower your BP...changing diet too.

Aside from your battles with BP...and its effects on the rest of your body. How are you physically? By that...I mean...how are your muscles, especially legs? Are you able to walk some distances?

hi hector ,im 59 just turned ,and 6foot 2 ,around 13 and a half stone ,muscle wise im reasonably okay i think ,ive done outdoor physical work on and off most of my working life ,construction etc ,and from 1989 ,to being advised to finish work in 2008 ,i worked rigging and installing tv aerials and satellite systems ,lumping ladders and cat ladders around up and down crawling around on roofs ,which was how i burst disc 3 and 5 in my spine after a fall off a roof ,

yeah walking has been a problem ,i used to be able to walk around 100 metres with out getting breathless ,but recently its dropped to around 25 m ,then im left breathless coughing ,choking almost to the point of vomiting*,pains in my chest ,sort of feels like something heavy is on my chest or like im being crushed ,it* takes around over 20 minutes for me to recover* to a reasonable state and after im left weak and with a terrible head ache

im told this is because im putting my heart under stress and due to the damage its endured it does not pump properly ,due to it being over worked like any muscle it gets hard and not squishy so don't work like its supposed to ,and thats what causes the problem not any weakness in my muscles

ive been treated for depression stress and anxiety ,and my family have have had some bad luck recently the main parts being ,18 november my daughter was a passenger in a bad car crash ,shes okay now but was pretty banged up knocked cold and has little or no memory of the crash ,and is still in physio

,and 14th december my son lost his 14 week son ,little gabriel was found to have a terrible birth defect ,he was perfect from the eyebrows down but had no skull to protect his brain ,so was terminated at 14 weeks ,due to him being so far down the pregnancy ,he was delivered in the natural way which was especially hard on meg his mother and my son ,and affected us all really deeply

sorry for going on but thought it pertinent to my condition ,as the stress affects me and i feel my heart can't deal with it easily due the the damage its endured,

dont drink alcohol or tea coffie ,haven't smoked for 42 years only eat around once a day ,never add salt or sugar to my food

I had to google 13 and a half stone. So you are around 200 pounds at 6' 2", that's quite excellent weight.

Looks like you were extremely active when you were working.

Man, it's a bummer you can't walk much...I'm so sorry for your medical condition, that's a bummer to hear.

You are not overweight, you eat relatively well, don't drink, haven't smoked in decades...yet that high BP of yours...looks like that's not your doing...that's something quite out of your control...which sucks.

So I can't recommend a walking regiment...nor diets, because those are not really problems...it's just looks like something genetic or deficient that you were born with...again, so sorry...

The only other thing I can advise is perhaps seeks some type of meditation class? Being able to relax both your mind and body can do wonders...staying hydrated too, keep drinking lots of fluids...it's good for your heart and all internal organs. Eat blueberries, pomegranates, lime juice. Cook only with olive oil if you must sauté or fry stuff...olive oil is good for the heart.

I feel for you...people take things for granted...many don't know how lucky they are. Unfortunately you were born unlucky in that regard.

I know if friggin sucks, but try to stay positive...try mediation, maybe low impact swimming...keep drinking lots of liquids...better to keep trying...than nothing at all. Oh, instead of one large meal a day...break it down to little snacks throughout the day...eat like a bird, peck, peck, peck. I'm also sorry about the other personal events involving your family.

Try to stay positive, keep on trucking...you are alive, breathe in the air, looks at the blue sky, smell the flowers...focus on the wonder things this planet has to offer...take it one day at a time.

That's all I can say at the moment...I hope for the best for you...I really do.

P.S. Sleep with your feet/legs a bit elevated...place a pillow under them...it will help circulation.

just hope ive not passed it on to my kids and my grandchildren
