One thing I find interesting is that movies become classics only after they have been on TV for those that didn't see it in the theater or dvd.
It's a Wonderful Life bombed at the Box Office as did Christmas Story but two movies that I agree are classics. Even Willy Wonka didn't do well.
Shawshank Redemption is one that fits in this category. I don't think it did well at the box office and it was only having seen it probably close to 100 times on dvd or tv that I consider it a classic."The farther we go, the more the ultimate explanation recedes from us, and all we have left is faith."

Hmmmm....
Thing is; for a film to really become a classic it has to make a lasting impression on the audience. Most new stuff (since the late 60's... so I guess that's not exactly "new") depends on spectacle, which only works until someone comes out with something MORE spectacular. That's why the special effects extravaganzas don't normally last.
I think Star Wars will be a classic for the ages. Sure it had the effects BUT there was a whole new undercurrent to it. It was the first film that presented space as being "lived in." AND it's taken on a life well beyond the films thanks to books, movies, toys....
Movies like Fight Club may not be classics; but they'll always have an audience 'cos there's always gonna be a small percentage of the moviegoing audience that the film speaks to. Rocky Horror fills this role as well. Most folks give it a firm "meh" IF they've seen it; but for a small cadre the film will ALWAYS be a fave. And that small but dedicated group will always keep it alive.
Bladerunner is another good one; and kinda fits both categories of classic. I know a lot of people who have never seen it, and it's kept alive mostly by a small dedicated group of fans; BUT that film really affected other filmmakers. You can see how bits of it; be it design, characterization, pacing, plotting... has worked it's way into so many films made after. (And not just the sci-fi ones.) So it'll always be a classic because of it's "behind the scenes" influence.
I find it kinda funny that the vast majority of film mentioned here are 30+ years old.

>That's because the movie sucks.
The booklet that came with the DVD has tons of reviewers saying the same thing....
Fight Club is one of them movies that has to resonate with a person. I loved it, 'cos that movie is what goes on in the back of my head every day of my life. (There are STILL people here in town that think my name is Dennis O'Bell....) But if you've never felt the way the characters in the movie do it's completely meaningless and unintelligible. Most folks preferred the stripped down version "American Beauty." Fight Club was about a guy unhappy 'cos he couldn't do anyting that mattered; American Beauty had a guy who was dissatisfied 'cos he couldn't consume without consequence. The latter struck more of a chord with the average person.
