I had the opportunity to take my family to Washington D.C. to watch the U.S. Women National Soccer Team ranked #1 in the world play Canada (I believe they are ranked #9).
Incredible game. The U.S. won 6-nil and it was interesting to see how differently the women's teams play (more of a possession style of soccer) compared to men's play which is much more tactical and fast paced.
They played at RFK Stadium which is where the Washington Redskins used to play and the Washington Nationals. Now, it is strictly a soccer stadium that D.C. United uses but the stadium holds around 65,000 or so spectators and wasn't designed for soccer so D.C. United is looking to build their own stadium that might hold around 25,000 or so fans tops.
I was really surprised that the turnout was very low considering this is the best women's soccer team in the world. I believe the attendance was somewhere between 9 and 10,000 and we purchased excellent seats for $35 a piece which I consider a bargain.
The oddest part was they had everyone sitting on one side of the stadium (the other side was completely empty). I mentioned to someone sitting around me why no one was sitting there because I wouldn't mind sitting in the front row at the 50 yard line over there. His response was interesting.
He said they placed everyone on one side so that when the camera showed a picture of the crowd, it would give the false impression that there was a huge turnout to the game when in reality only about 15% of the stadium was full.
Oh well. My daughter really enjoyed the game and was able to get about 5 players autograph her program. She almost got Hope Solo's autograph (wow, she is pretty). We were standing 4 feet from her and everyone was clamoring for her autograph and she did try to appease as many people as possible but would have been there all night if she signed for everyone that wanted one and had to walk away.
One classic move I always see sports players do when they are done signing or don't want to sign autographs is to have a security guard or someone with them and pretend to be engaged in an indepth conversation with them acting so involved in the conversation that they can't hear their name being shouted by thousand's of fans asking for an autograph. She pulled that move but it was completely understandable.
She was out there for at least 15 or 20 minutes signing autographs and moving around the stadium to try to do what she could. Unfortunately, she stopped just as my daughter was in turn to get her autograph. My daughter wasn't disappointed since 5 other players signed her program and even said a few kind words to her which was made her night.
