Need proof? Just google those four names and see who has the most hits (ok, I'll do it for you)
Batman 78,600,000
Superman 51,200,000
Spiderman 41,000,000
Hulk 29,000,000
To ME, any hero who could sit and conciously think to himself, "Criminals are a cowardly superstitious lot"HAS to be #1!!!
Maybe it's just the (Gothamite) New Yorker in me, but I like my hero gritty and dark.
I don't think there is a mythology anywhere among comic book superheroes that is cooler than THE BATMAN (billionaire playboy with a cave of operations under his mansion. World's greatest detective and master of all martial arts. Butler is a former combat medic. Boy partner. Cruising in a wicked Hot Rod through the streets of Gotham. HUGE Bat-beacon from the roof of Police HQ flashes in the sky to summon him... It's all beyond cool!!
And the dark, simple, under-stated, iconic design of his uniform appeals to me tremendously.
Yep. The Batman is definitely tops!
Evidently, children All throughout the 1970's and early 80's who wanted MEGO action figure toys agreed with ME judging by the sales figures
Superman ranks #2, Spiderman #3, and in the #4 spot... I have no nominee. I like The Hulk, but he is no where near the #4 spot for me.
In terms of recognition, I think it would have to be the "S" shield logo. I would venture to guess that there would be some countries where the logo is known without the actual Superman mythos being known. Is there any link about overseas box office for movies? That might clue in to the most popular character.
It's interesting that these four were picked; since essentially EVERY superhero draws from one of these four:
-Superman is the prototype; and represents the larger than life, gooder than good ideal.
-Batman exists for vengeance and to punish the guilty
-Spiderman is the average guy in WAY over his head, trying to do what's right and make the best of it.
-Hulk is the reluctant hero, doing good almost by accident
Every superhero is one of these four. The powers change, the setting changes, but the core is always one of these four.
