As an artist...this makes me sick.

This lovely scrawling which could have just as easily been drawn by a chimpanzee with a sharpie is being auctioned off by Swann Galleries for $25,000 to 35,000.

Where oh where did I go wrong.

It just reminds me of that popular saying - Even a dead clock is right twice a day.

I could auction my turds for $25,000 apiece

The trick is finding a nitwit to buy them

Just eat some food coloring and go on a canvas. It's been done before...and sold for thousands!!!

It's never been about the art, it's always been about the name and the prestige.

Look how much the work of Andres Serrano can sell for, we are talking about serious bodily fluids!

Art being art is probably one of the things in this world that is open to both interpretation and subjectiveness. What one person sees as a series of smears of paint on canvas, maybe an artist cleaning their brush, might be viewed by someone else as a total masterpiece. Personally, Dwayne, I'm in the camp with you when it comes to the example you pointed out. I stared at it and squinted at it for a long time to see if there may've been a hidden image there, but, still, all I see is squiggles. As MIB41(Tom) can attest, he and I went to school with an individual whose artistic range and vision was usually-----quite different from everyone else's, but it was, nonetheless, still considered art....
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

Wall graffiti can look pretty amazing, but I'm not seeing anything interesting in the above painting, certainly not
                  at that price.

I agree but it's all in the eye of the beholder. Not sure what they see in some things but still a lot of people don't consider comic artwork as real talent or artwork so who's to say.

As a pre-school teacher I see Art like this every day. My kids could make millions!
"Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."

As an Artist and Graphic Designer I agree with you too. Art sometimes seems like it's less about talent and vision and more about convincing everyone else that your work is brilliant.

I love when an artist is able to create enough hype to sell anything for cash... and when it's a nice chuck of change like this guy made, I like it even more.

As a professional artist for 25+ years, I can say it's hard to build up a name and a following. To put it in toy terms, it's why Charlee Flatt figures sell for what they sell for when many people on the board can do the same thing, and why Sucklord can make big money for his bootleg casts. Name and brand is everything!

So true...if only I would have thought that back in 83/84 when I first started going to comic cons....I'd be F'n RICH!!!!!
