    Spray paint sales in Portland

I tried to buy some spray paint yesterday, so I could paint some toys.
They told me it would take a little while, because they needed to copy my identification, and log all the colors and brands of paint I wanted.
    I told them "No".
Okay, so why would they want to keep track of what paint I buy? Are they out there doing chemical tests on all the graffiti around the city? Hell no! Is it some kind of intimidation tactic to scare the people doing graffiti, so they think they could get busted for tagging? I was offended, even if it is a Portland ordinance. It's beyond invasive, and I'll buy my paint in another city. Why do they really want the information?

In the waning days of making my Kirk chairs I had trouble finding Testors spray primer.

Was told it was now illegal in New Jersey (like 10-ish years ago)

Luckly I was only a hop skip and jump from the PA border (which had less restrictions)

Maybe it isn't graffiti -- maybe they're thinking about banning some and they need more research into who is buying it for what reason ?

Its either taggers or huffers they are after.

        Most likely.

I worked in the Hardware Business years ago when meth was coming on the scene and law enforcement asked businesses to start logging purchases for the nasty stuff people use to make that. Retailers were also logging and restricting purchases of certain cold medicines, too, for the same reasons. I also was told at that time that huffers prefer the chrome and metallic paints.

While I agree it's probably huffers, come on! Seriously! You can't buy Sudafed without ID, and now you can't buy spray paint! I know people use them for nefarious reasons, but I have to give ID to buy spray paint! Seriously!

Yeah it's pretty much the same when buying those canisters of air dusters. Idiots are huffing those like crazy!

I was just in Austin, TX at an art supply store where I noticed two scruffy dudes buying a couple of cans of spray paint. As they were leaving, the clerk cheerfully called out "enjoy your spray paint" to them, as if he knew they were about to eat it or something. I thought that a bit awkward if not just an odd way of dealing with folks that were probably not using the product as intended.

When I left the store, I saw the pair around the back deciding what they were going to do to 'fix' a gigantic mural over the storage area and dumpster that belonged to the art store. btw - the mural looked to be a sort of additive community kind of thing rather than just one persons tag. I don't know if the artists needed to give any ID or info for the paint to add to the mural, but I thought it was sort of a funny 'Slacker' kind of scene totally apropos to Austin.

I also felt a little bad about assuming they were going to huff the paint.

I'd sell as much as I could to those huffers. Takes care of two problems, normal people wanting to buy paint, and gets rid of the huffer issue permanently(eventually).

In Oregon you need a prescription to get sudafed. Not just ID.

                        It's aimed at graffiti.
