I'm not trying to go over all the details or put Gibson on trial here - but people tend to rehash the fact that Gibson insulted Jews and leave out the horribly racist things he said about blacks, Mexicans and his backward comments about gay people...He was also a drunk driver who was accused of spousal abuse.

He's also got a deeper history with accusations of being anti-Jew well before his racist rants became public, so to many the rants were just a smoking gun.

Having said all that, I always thought he was talented and I look forward to his new work. I hope he worked out his *poop*, but that's really his problem and not mine.

Tell me what's wrong with this picture.
Allen was accused, but never charged, and I'd argue his career did take a fair sized hit if you look at his box office numbers.

David Bowie (and tons of others) are known to have sex with minors, and nobody cares or judges him. Justice in the court of public opinion can be so random.

I'm the kinda guy that can't separate the character from the real man.

Meaning, everytime I see Gibson in a film I can't help but think of his nasty beliefs.

It's same as I can't watch Mathew Brodrick and not keep thinking "he actually killed somebody"

I guess i'm weak and have less imagination than most.

          1. I think most people react most to dissonance between public persona and private behavior. In Mel's case, I think people believed he was his Hollywood "fun action hero" persona, and felt betrayed when they found out he had this darker side.

          2. As Brazoo said, it was more than just one drunken rant. For me, the recordings of him screaming and threatening the mother of his child was the straw that broke the camel's back.

          3. While his actions hurt his career (as with Allen and Polanski and others), he is clearly not blackballed from Hollywood. If you can make them money, nothing is so heinous that Hollywood will not forgive you.

          4. I will not boycott a movie just because I dislike an actor in it. But I will be more willing to go see a movie with someone I particularly like, and less likely with someone who I particularly do not. I think most people are this way.

          5. "Poor Mel"... but Birth of a Nation is just going through the same discussion. So it is not like he is being unfairly singled out, while everyone else gets a free pass.

It depend what the actor did.

Like I couldn't care less about Winona Ryder being a klepto

I'd rather see one million Mel Gibson movies...than one featuring Gwyneth Paltrow...except for the movie Seven...

Gibson is a cretin. A talented cretin no doubt, with an undeniable talent.

                  But a cretin nonetheless.

The Holocaust is one of the single most well-documented and recorded events in the 20th century. By comparison, the landing on the moon is like a tall-tale compared to the sheer robustness of evidence regarding the Holocaust.

A Holocaust denier will never get a cent of my money knowingly.

I don't want to shut him down. Or stop him from working.

I just don't f***ing care about him anymore. He will not profit by me.

I'm sure he's all broken up by that

For me I honestly believe the gross thoughts in his head are his poisons to deal with. Maybe he's straightened his brain out now, maybe not. Personally, I can watch and enjoy a Mel Gibson movie AND believe he's got a lot of stupid and terrible ideas. I'll just enjoy myself a lot more if I see one of his movies on Netflix instead of plunking down cash in the theatre.
