    Labor Day

When I was young Labor Day was officially the last day of summer for me as school would start the next day. It was always a big deal in my family because our swim club where we went all summer had a end of summer family event. Back then most everyone ( including my dad who worked 24/7) had the day off. Not a big holiday like Christmas or thanksgiving but one none the less (really miss those Labor Days).
Still seems weird for me at least where I live that school for kids starts in mid August nowdays.
Did anyone else have the school year start after Labor Day?

We also used to start school the day after, but Portland schools started last week, I think.

yeah, school always started after Labor Day. it is not always the next day anymore for the kids, but my teacher wife has to start tomorrow. the kids start Thursday. I consider it the end of summer too though and closed my pool over the weekend.

Bring on fall, Oktoberfest season and Halloween!

Growing up, our Labour Day weekend tradition was watching the Jerry Lewis Telethon then watching Superman 2 as a family.

My school always started later during the week of Labor Day, if I recall. We avoided the crowds and stayed home, but symbolically that was the end of my summer vaca. We went until June 6-8 most years. Now, my kids have already been in school for 2 1/2 weeks, and this is just a random 3 day weekend. Some of the schools around here don't have A/C, and administrators are starting to notice that it's a problem (not sure what took them so long). On the other end, my kids were out of school the whole week before Mem'l day, and we had a nice vaca before the crowds picked up. I guess it's not a big deal.

When I was a kid, we had the annual block party the Saturday before Labor Day. When I say block party, I don't just mean some families getting together, I mean this thing was sponsored by the city and was a big deal. Bandstand at the top of the block, food at the bottom and some vendors in the middle. The street was blocked off by the police barracdes. I used to always get excited when the banner and the flags (like a car dealership), would go up, b/c you knew it was coming. That always marked the end of the summer, and then after Labor Day (usually around Sept. 9th), school would start. Now these kids go to school in August. I remember when they first started doing that around here. Parents were livid!

As far as Jerry Lewis I saw a interview with him on TV right after I typed this. Honestly I didn't know he was still alive and making movies. Surprised no one took over that telethon.
