What happened to Netflix ? --- (it turned super lousy)

I haven't gotten Netflix in at least 4 years now.

I decided to take advantage of their free one month membership promotion.

Wow, what the heck happened to them ?

They literally have none of the newer movies I wanted to see (popular movies that were released within the last few years).

Their horror section reminds me of the Chiller channel ....

They don't even have classic movies anymore .... no Mel Brooks movies except To Be or Not to Be ...

Only Star Wars they have is a cartoon.

No Doctor Who --- (they used to have millions)

I feel cheated even with a FREE membership

yeah, its not what it used to be. The marvel stuff is holding me there and the ongoing promise of the Disney catalog being added, which is still a handful of stuff.

For me it's well worth it just for all the kids stuff, my daughter is addicted to Netflix. Plus, I like a lot of their original programming, more hits than misses IMO (I'm looking forward to Luke Cage and the second season of Narcos next month). Netflix Canada has a deal with several studios (Disney, Paramount and one or two others) where they have the movies available eight months after theatrical release, so that's not bad either.

Streaming will never replace physical media for that very reason. I don't want what I can or can't watch at any given time dictated by someone else. If I own it, I can watch it whenever I want.

Love Netflix for its own original programming, Daredevil, Jessica Jones...Orange is the New Black, House of Cards, Marco Polo, Narcos...

...and Luke Cage is coming...along with Iron Fist...

...then the mother of all shows...Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist...will assemble together...and will get The Defenders.

Heck, just saw Disney's Fantasia last night...love that animated movie. Will watch Fantasia 2000 tonight.

To me, Netflix has never been better.

I do agree with you on that but the appeal for me about streaming is there is a lot of stuff I don't mind watching, that I don't necessarily wanna own.

I do buy less Blu Rays now but when I do, they're stuff I want to own and collect.

You know, I used to think that way, but now I look at the shelves full of DVDs, Blu-rays, etc in my house. A large percent of which I only watched once, but I had to own it, many even blind bought (that old collectors instinct is hard to resist) and I shudder to think how many thousands of dollars I've spent on them all over the last 20 years and most I'd be lucky to get pennies on the dollar for if I sold them. Plus they are taking up a lot of space that I don't have. I've scaled waaaay back on my movie purchases, it has to be something I really love and can watch over and over again. Physical media is dying, sales figures show that, the writing is on the wall. If anything, they will become a niche product for movie collectors, no longer for the general public, just like laserdiscs used to be. It won't happen overnight but it will slowly happen. Right now, I'm in the process of ripping my discs and putting them on an NAS, so will have my own personal Netflix to stream my movies on.

Yep, that's a part of Canada Netflix's deal with Disney that I mentioned above. We get the Star Wars and Marvel movies before any other country's Netflix. Makes up for Canada's kinda crappy selection compared to the US.

I used to have a way of watching Netflix all over the world, but they put an end to that. Looking for an alternative workaround that they might have a tougher time stopping.

Yeah, I also had that. It was terrific, Hulu too.

I had a yardsale just before I moved, people really gravitated towards the $2 DVD section, cleaned me out. Couldn't give CDs away though.....

I think Netflix is more interested in being a television channel instead of a movie channel. And I think Hulu and Amazon Prime are heading that way too. Putting there money into advertising and producing their own stuff instead of basically renting movies. In a way I like having a whole season of a show available to watch when and as fast as I want, rather than parsed out over months via regular tv.
It still seems better than the pay movie channels like HBO etc. Don't have those but when we get the free weekends I don't find much on there that's interesting or I haven't already seen years ago (last time it was free they ran Howard the Duck!?).

same here. I buy far less Bluray's than I used to. for the 8 or 9 dollars a month for a Netflix subscription, it is worth it. mostly my kids watch seasons of tv shows on there but the wife and I do scroll through on weekends to see what we want to watch

Yeah, their movie selection does seem weak. (I agree with the sub-par Chiller channel quality horror and sci-fi catalog.) I hang on waiting for Disney stuff to show up. But I REALLY liked Stranger Things. And I wouldn't have sought out the Sherlock series otherwise, but it is really good. So there are some good things in there if you look around... Hey... Big Trouble in Little China is there!
