    The best American cheese EVER!

Remember that incredible American cheese that the government used to give out? My grandmother used to get it and whenever we stayed at her house we had some...it was soooo good.

Well, I found it again. Turns out it was made for the government by Land O Lakes, and they still make it, only now it's sold in delis.

It's Land O Lakes Sharp American, and it is definitely the same cheese. Absolutely incredible. None of that rubbery Kraft singles crap.

It's got a very strong rich flavor, creamy texture, but firm. I made the best grilled cheese I've ever had with it.

It was $5 a pound but damn was it worth it.

Thanks so much for sharing this, sincerely. 'Cause I cannot gag down singles. I, too, fondly recall the govt. cheese--it makes some mac that will make you swoon.

The Kraft deli slices are better than the singles. But there ain't nothing like gubment cheese. My grandma used to get the big blocks as well, and it was so good!

I had an elderly aunt who got the same cheese. It was good stuff. I remember her serving it on crackers along with homemade vegetable soup.

I like Velveeta singles. They don't have much fat, they melt well, and they taste OK. My fav is Land O Lakes white American, though.

I used to get that cheese when I lived w/ my dad. I made the most incredible bacon and fried cheese sandwiches. Extra flat, extra crispy! YUM!

Good to know. I saw that at the Wal-Mart deli last week and almost got a pound. I'll have to give it a shot!

We used to get it when we lived in the projects in Manhattan.

Instead of doing the smart thing, and taking it to the deli to be cut by their slicer, we let it stay in the block state in the fridge, and we could never finish it! Before we were half way done with it, it was getting moldy, and had to be thrown out.

                    It tasted really good though.

When I was very young, My grandpa, as a longshore foreman, worked with the Japanese crewmen who brought cases of ramen packages just like the kind you see in stores today to trade with. Directions in Japanese and three illustrations that clearly showed how to prepare it. Keep in mind this is around 69,70. Ramen is not sold in our local grocery stores. Over the years ramen seem to have lost someting. So around 1990, I mention this to my mom. She told me it was the seaweed in the flavor pack. Apparently when ramen appeared in the US market, they decided to take the dried seaweed from the flavor pack because Americans don't like to eat seaweed.

I use the Kraft Deli slices for my burgers. Kraft singles are horrid, nothing but tasteless plastic.

As soon as I read the thread title I knew the answer. Land of lakes is the best cheese brand period, they surpassed kraft a while back. If they ever go into the shredded market look out. Lol cheese is my signature ingredient in scrambled eggs.
