Pepperspray is a good alternative to a gun. (Although I think you guys in the US can buy actual mace; which is better.) Dogs are good for protecting the house. Unless you've cheesed off the mob, most people breaking into your house are looking for a few things they can hawk quick, or a cheap thrill. Both types'll usually bypass a house with a dog. Even a small one.

Guns can be tricky to use; and you REALLY have to think about it. Dead is dead, and once you kill someone; even if they deserved it, you'll have to live with it. And there's ALWAYS a chance of collateral damage: hitting a neighbor, shots going through a window, shots going through an interior wall and hitting a family member....

Thanks to all for the info & replies! Out here in Las Vegas we have a pretty high crime rate. My neighborhood isnt so bad but lately home invasions are on the rise, happen alot out here. We do have a Puppy, as of right now he isnt much of a guard or even watchdog, who knows maybe in time.

For protection i'm going Shotgun, havent decided between the two though. Yep will go for lessons also.
