Wow! Ironman grosses $104 mil in US, $201 worldwide!

Checkout link below. This film is red hot! Saw it today and, in my opinion, it is tied with Spiderman 2 as the best superhero film ever. Adbsolutely incredible film and one everyone should see whether you have ever follow the comic or not. I wonder if this film can eclipse Spiderman's domestic tally of over $430 million? Should be interesting to watch.

The amazing thing is that it did not have the same size built in audience that spidey had.

Yeah, I know many people who do not even know who Iron Man is. He's not a more recognizable superhero by any means.....

I run a movie theatre , so I'm not surprised. It started well on Friday, but got stronger on Saturday and maintained solid numbers Sunday. Due to the stellar reviews, the older crowd came in to see it. That's what puts a movie like this over the top.

Very unlikely considering all the big movies yet to come (Indiana Jones, Dark Knight, Hulk, Hellboy 2, Hancock, Narnia 2, etc...)...the competition is the fiercest ever this Summer.

Movies don't have the staying power they used to. You can generally expect at least a 50% drop each week. A good movie like this can expect to make 3 times it opening, but 4 times would be a stretch. It should have a good run against Speed Racer and the Narnia movie, but Indiana Jones should put an end to the big numbers. I still think $300 Million domestic is very realistic, but it will be tougher to hit more than that with kids still in school. That would put it right behind the three Spiderman movies in the Superhero genre, not bad for a B level hero.

I didn't go see it, I hate opening weekend crowds. I'll go this weekend. Iron Man may not have the same following Spidey or Bats has but I think he is very recognizable to people in general. His armor has changed over the years but still he maintains his identity.

Try asking people who don't follow comics or sci fi in general if they know who he is. I had no less than 3 people on different occasions this weekend profess to me they have no idea who Iron Man is. One friend thought he had something to do with Black Sabbath.

I don't think it matters if the audience know who Iron Man is in the comics, I think it is just a good all round entertaining flick, that's what is keeping them coming, word of mouth, almost flawless reviews, no one is saying this is a bad movie,
Even Spider-man had its detractors with the terrible Green Goblin suit (not easy to get that wrong was it?) and personally the Abomination should have those pointy ears in the new Hulk movie. Keep fan boys happy and it makes no difference to the general pop corn audience.

I saw the movie this weekend. We went to an early sunday screening, very small crowd at 10 am. The movie was great and really worth seeing. I actually think the best part of it was the actors, not the effects. Especially Robert Downey Jr., inspired casting.

One recommendation, stay past the closing credits. You won't want to miss what happens. Maybe this is old news, but there is a scene that happens. You leave the theatre totally giddy : )

Same here - I figured that since he is such a prominent character that people knew who he was. More of my non comic friends don't know him than do.
