This seems to be a thing of the past, I think. I used to LOVE family picnics. My dad's job had this piece of land in upstate NY called Echo Hill/Camp Henry. They would use it for retreats and family gatherings. To a city kid this was Heaven on Earth! There were 2 swimming pools, and it was in the woods, so we could catch fireflies and frogs and hear crickets at night. My mom would pack up the cooler w/ sodas and fill the large old thermos w/ juice, and we had sandwiches and cookies and Cheetos. We'd have our huge blankets and towels on the grass by the pool, play frisbee, and ball. And we had to have the AM radio going all day! Sometimes I'd go horseback riding on a horse my dad's co-worker would keep up there. It was so cool.
Here in Oakland, I remember I used to pass by Astro Park and see families sitting on blankets, eating, toss frisbees and football, and playing music on their radios. I just don't see that anymore.
Do you have fond memories of picnics past? Or do you still take the family out for a picnic now?
