    Family Picnics

This seems to be a thing of the past, I think. I used to LOVE family picnics. My dad's job had this piece of land in upstate NY called Echo Hill/Camp Henry. They would use it for retreats and family gatherings. To a city kid this was Heaven on Earth! There were 2 swimming pools, and it was in the woods, so we could catch fireflies and frogs and hear crickets at night. My mom would pack up the cooler w/ sodas and fill the large old thermos w/ juice, and we had sandwiches and cookies and Cheetos. We'd have our huge blankets and towels on the grass by the pool, play frisbee, and ball. And we had to have the AM radio going all day! Sometimes I'd go horseback riding on a horse my dad's co-worker would keep up there. It was so cool.

Here in Oakland, I remember I used to pass by Astro Park and see families sitting on blankets, eating, toss frisbees and football, and playing music on their radios. I just don't see that anymore.

Do you have fond memories of picnics past? Or do you still take the family out for a picnic now?

In High school I use to volunteer a lot to do the family business picnics when I was in ROTC,they had all sorts of foods and games it was fun.

As for family picnics,we use to have like 1 a year in a place called Tropical Park in Miami, but sadly we stopped doing it years ago

Never had one. We had family cookouts. In the summer we still have them. Some times we'll be at my parents pool and before you know it there is about 20 people (all family) there and we have a cook out.

when we were kids, the family would gather in the big park where i lived...during the summer at some point...dont really know when it was..maybe memorial or labor day...maybe the 4th of july...too young to remember...we would also have cookouts at whoever's house too. not so much anymore...i dont live around "my" family anymmore..just the wife's..and she only has mom/dad/sister and our kids..so it's a lot smaller of a group than what i used to hang out with...but we do the occasional cookout every so often...

My nieces and nephew made a picnic basket to surprise me a few months back. We had a great time, and I will always remember that day.
