Good on you! People don't always do the right thing and don't want to get involved. Without you it could have been so much worse.

Way to go! You were in the right place at the right time, for sure. And you had the common sense, descency, and courage to go help. Many people would not have.
I have made three 911 calls in the last ten years....one attacking pit bull, one suicide at the end of our airstrip, and one car accident after drunk teens took their car down the airstrip at 100 mph and flipped. In all three cases, the response from both dispatcher and responders was fast. In the pit bull incident, the dispatcher stayed on the line with me when the dog had me cornered and even patched in both the responding deputies and my husband so they could hear what was happening. During the suicide, EMTs arrived within five minutes but were not allowed to approach until deputies first intervened. But all in all, the 911 system has worked well for us.sigpicComment

Yes, Ben you are a hero! I'm so glad you were able to help that man put out the fire.
And that 911 video above is just NUTS. That cop should have been fired."Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."Comment

As for calling help-lines: years ago, a close relative threatened he was going to kill himself. We knew he was serious. There is a special help-line here in Belgium where people "in emotional distress" can call. I did, got someone on the line, and all I got was "I don't know, call the police?"
I could have figured that out by myself..
