Who here has done Route 66? - Thinking of doing a long weekend photog trip

I am planning on heading out EARLY Friday morning and making it to Amarillo mid-afternoon, and maybe head back east a little for a couple attractions. Head to Santa Rosa that evening, staying at the Blue Shallow motel Friday night. From there, mill around a few attractions and then head south to Roswell. Photograph all around Roswell Sunday. Start heading home a different route, south the El Paso (I-10), get home late Monday night (early Tuesday morning).

Any MUST SEE attractions other then the normal Google hits?

One of my friends is doing it right now. He started in Chicago and is working his way west. I think he's traveling the whole route. Seems like a lot of fun, but I wouldn't know where to stop along the way. He's only posting one photo per day on Facebook, but I'm positive he's documenting everything along the way, as he's an avid photography buff.
