Have you radically changed your collection over the years?

I have, many times.

As a kid...was heavily into building model kits, mind you, I was never a pro...just about every single model I built was for self satisfaction, zero to none in terms of value...but once built...I would display them on shelves.

As a kid, I had of course Megos, but never saw them as collectibles, just play fun stuff.

Then lost interest in that...and got into comic books.

My desire for comic collecting started to dim in the late 90's to early 00's.

In 2001, I started seriously collecting Megos.

After I completed my loose Mego collection (superheroes, POTA, Star Trek, etc)...after a few years...I got a bit bored...and started collecting my childhood favorite superhero...Superman.

Sold all my Megos, except the Superman line.

Stared collecting anything and everything Superman.

That has been going on for about eight years.

Well, thanks to Zack Snyder...I'm now sort of bored with my Superman collection...

Enter my new itch...Alien Xenomorph collectibles, lol.

All based on my love for the movie Alien/Aliens.

I can't stop, it's like a disease...

Superman to Alien, light to darkness, weird, I know...

I will not sell my entire Supes collection, but some.

Is this strange? Or have you guys gone through a similar scenario?

I'm curious...




P.S. I was also into model rocketry and RC cars...but those were more like hobbies, not collections.

I used to collect all thing mego now I stick to mostly superhero items.

I went on a marvel universe kick, I have a few x-men and the DEFENDERS.

I collected vintage and 66 Batman related items for the last 4 years now besides the mego Batman family I could care less. I'll probably sell some of it when I need some ebay cash.

I collected vintage Aquaman for over a year, besides the mego bendy, the endless comics, and some rarer stuff there isn't much left to find.

I'd like to get the first 20 issues of the Defenders but early bronze age comics are selling really high right now.

I agree it is fun to sell old interests to fund purchases.

Agreed with you and Mike...selling to get other things...it's almost a hobby of its own...similar to the thrill of the hunt.

Nope. I've added sub-collections, but I've never really moved on past my Batman/Superman/DC collection.

I got REALLY into Big Jim and GI Joe in the early 2000s, I pared back significantly when I focused on Mego Comic Action stuff but I kept the favourites.

No, my tastes are pretty stable and solidly nostalgia-based. I did unload Star Wars after college and have become more selective, but my favorites have remained.

Pal, I wish I had known you when you were thinning those Big Jims. I have never been a fan of the "thrill of the hunt."

In the 70s it was comic books, mostly superhero stuff, and Mego.
In the 80s it was comic books and superpowers action figures.
In the 90s it was comic books, action figures, Model kits, and customizing action figures into other characters.
2000 was a turning point. After decades of impulse buying, I began the big purge. Selling off as much as I could allow myself. Toward the end of decade I had gotten rid of 75% including all my custom action figure fodder.
By 2009, I found the Mego Museum and my new hobby; Custom Mego Action Figures.
I still pick up vintage comics and magazines here and there, as well as vintage toys. Now I just pass on so much stuff, because my collecting is very focused. The old impulse buying is still in me. It just doesn't make it to the check out stand anymore.

Even though I've gotten into other things, my collection remains the same.

From 12" GIJoes, to Megos, to American Girl/Boy dolls. But there are other things I collect too, like Hot Wheels, Power Records and comic books, and I still have all my stuff. I just don't do toy shows anymore, b/c of my bad back arthritic knees, (and b/c space is a factor).

I have not changed too much.

I collected Megos until 78 when I went to Star Wars.

By the end of High School (86) I packed away memos and Star Wars.

Late in college (92) I took out my figures and then bought a couple Star Wars and Mego figures.

Then I went in heavy collecting 90's Marvel and DC - trying to get (at least) one of every character in each universe.
I also started actively looking for Megos again (I was a Mego Museum Lurker from the toy mania days.

In 1999 I decided to stop buying modern action figures. I began selling or giving away toys.

I focused on Collecting 'em all. I was buying and selling on eBay. I officially joined Mego Museum 2005 and attended my first Mego Meet.

I Collect 'Em All (well most) and decided I did need them all. I started selling them off in 2012.

Now I just get the occasional figure. I have fun hunting down Ewoks for Eleanor at local toy shows. I enjoy getting partially finished Megos to put pack together.

Besides toys I have been hooked on acquiring Vinyl and other music. - Oh and of course comics. Too many comics.

I've tried to limit myself to Megos. I just don't have the room for other things. I had a bunch of superhero related action figures in the early 200's but I sold it all off. I did keep the 12" Batman line of megolike figures from Kenner. I see tons of stuff I'd love to have but I make myself stick to Megos and Remegos. I just got the Robin from the Superfriends FTC Line and man I love it. I did however get one of those Jakks Big Figs (The Blue Batman). Now I don't know how to display it.

I think everyone goes through waves of collecting things, getting rid of it, starting over again, or focusing on other themes.
I bounce around a lot. I cannot afford Hot Toys or many of the vintage things I'd want so I mainly try to stick with reMego and Lego items.
When it comes to used vintage items I have to refurbish them. But if money weren't an object I'd love to own all the vintage small Star Wars figures since mine were stolen in 6th grade.
Things like SMDM or Shogun Warrior, I've had to refurbish. I still have my small childhood Joes. I recollected M.U.S.C.L.E. figures and own the 225 Mattel made, alas no #226 Satan Cross. Bought all the MOTU reissues in the early 2000s, which sadly ended too soon, because all my He-Man stuff was sold at Swap Meets or Yard Sales. Like others I dabble with other lines: Funko minis, Pops!, Captain Action and the 14" Thundercats line. I'm probably forgetting other things.

Late sixties, seventies, eighties and about two years into the nineties, comics were my obsession of choice. If it was on the comic book rack, I'd buy it. Some I loved (Spidey, Thor, Cap, Bats, Superman (to differing degrees), MTU, Werewolf By Night, FF, X-Men, Teen Titans, Nova, Rom, Micronauts, Godzilla---you get the picture) and some I didn't care for. Those were the comics that made their way to the yard sales and libraries. Then something happened in the nineties that made me lose pretty much all interest in comics; not sure if it was getting older or comics becoming more and more gimmicky (and expensive). Last comic series I bought religiously was the Annihilation mini-series and the new take on Nova it produced.

Early eighties through the nineties found my expendable income going more towards music, be it vinyl, cassette or CD. I was introduced to The Cowboy Junkies in the spring of '88 with "The Trinity Session" and I immediately fell in love with Margo Timmins haunting voice, so I would spend pretty much all my free time scouring used record and book stores for Junkie stuff and I'm proud to say that that obsession is still with me today as is my love of other great artists both present and past.

Late eighties and early nineties found me dividing my interests between music, Star Trek (which, ironically, I hated as a kid since I was a dyed-in-the-wool Lost In Space nut) and Snoopy memorabilia. I still have probably three or four moving cartons chock full of TREK merchandise in my Mom's garage. Mid to late eighties also found me obsessed with something I never expected; a young lady who came into my life and pretty much made such a huge impact on me that, even some thirty years later, I still think of her and wonder what might have been...

Mid to late nineties found me with a renewed interested in classic comics as well as tomes from Stephen King. I loved reading his stuff (still do) because he was able to convey such depth of idea and such detail without overwhelming the layman' brain.

Nowadays, I still enjoy collecting music (if I happen across any current artists I enjoy which, sadly, aren't many), and comics are still a part of my collecting only in a different medium as I enjoy collecting and admiring the current rounds of comic-related figurines from Sideshow, Kotobukiya, etc. Don't have many since they're a bit pricey but the ones I DO have I really love. And then there's The Doctor, that long-lived, multi-regenerable Galifreyan and his blue box. Collecting TARDISs has become something of a current obsession and I'm determined that someday, I'm going to build my own, fully to scale Police Box. If only I could find a way to make it bigger on the inside and go back in time to a chilly December night in 1985...
