When and why did "emoticons" become "emojis"??

Does someone actually think up this stuff, or did someone say it wrong once and it caught on? I can't keep up w/ these new words and phrases. These wonderful things we can put in our posts -----> I'm going to continue to call them emoticons. Emoji sounds like some exotic dessert!

        Two different things.

An emoticon refers to using the punctuation keys to make a face, for example.... Like this :-/

An emoji is the junk that now shows up in our virtual keyboards, like poop -Chris

But those turn into emoticons on Yahoo, (who I think started it, but not sure), when you type in the keys. And they're selling those smiley face pillows and calling them Emoji pillows.

Yes, they do...here too...but it's still the same definition

Using punctuation keystrokes to make an emoticon

Emoji are symbols - poop, hearts, houses etc that you can pull up on your smartphone keyboard and insert. No punctuation keys requires

Like Hardygirl I would have sworn that when they first started popping up the symbols themselves were also referred to as emoticons.

I thought emoji was a brand name that caught on like Frisbee or Kleenex.
