My TV turns on and off by itself ...ghost haunting me ?

I have a flat screen TV

It's a few years old, my nephew gave it to me when he moved.

Been playing fine for the last year and a half.

Starting yesterday it would just turn off by itself --- then immediately turn on again.

Last night it turned itself on in the middle of the night and stayed on while I was sleeping.

I checked all the timers and everything, they seem fine and set.

    Note: TVO/cable box stays on.

Any idea's what might be causing this ?

Hope it's not the TV starting to go.

Go for the simpler eliminations first. I could possibly be that the on/off button on the remote is sticking. Try either taking the batteries out or placing it in a drawer so that the IR can't be picked up. Also check out the actual on/off button on the TV itself.

If it's not that it could just be bad capacitor/s. If it is the capacitors it's a cheap easy fix that you can do yourself.

Out of interest, what make of TV is it?

Oh, and have you plugged any new appliances into the TV recently? Blu ray player, PlayStation, etc.....

      The TV brand is INSIGNIA

Also, when the TV turns on by itself it has this pop-up screen floating around like a screen saver.
      It say's......

Press select if you are still watching this channel otherwise it might become temporarily unavailable Contact cable company for more information

wondering it that box has something to do with it ? ... it must because it all happened at the same time.

Sounds like a conflict between the TV and the box or just the box is starting to play up. Try unplugging the box from the TV and see how you get on. In these sort of cases it's usually something really simple, but it's just process of elimination to find the root of the problem. Just unplug the box from the wall and remove the hdmi lead from the back of the TV.

it could also very well be someone near by using something on the same frequency (sometimes even an airplane flying overhead can cause it). had a similar issue (turn on/off by itself) with my analog set a few years ago, but the problem then just went away never to return

If connected to a cable box, many of the newer boxes do allow a one touch both tv and cablebox on remote setup. So if the cable box is doing some sort of sleep mode or on a timer that can also cause your set to turn on. As suggested by Boy Wonder- unhook the cable box and start with the simple

Personally I'd want it to be a ghost, because that's cheaper than replacing electronics.

I'm not saying this is the problem, but electronics and barbershops don't alway go well together. The tiny short hair gets everywhere. Including stereos circut-boards. Causing connections where none should exist. Power going on and off, volume going up and down and changing stations. Instead of having the circut-boards cleaned, the shop owner just replaced the stereo.

Unplug your tv , if it's a ghost it'll still be able to turn on your tv.

If it turns out to be a ghost, hire an optimistic clairvoyant. Always good to go with a happy medium.

I'm gonna say remote control, though not necessarily the TV's remote. Prob a button sticking, or otherwise acting hinky because of low batteries.

Did you ask your local cable company? might be the actual box and not the tv,
either that or maybe the Grays are trying to contact you for an important message?

Do you have any trouble turning it on or off when you want to? Also, is it plugged into a power strip or straight into the wall?
