This promises to be possibly the best Geek Summer Movie ever. I can't remember a summer with so many movies that I want to see.
Here's a peek at some of the big movies coming out and their release dates.
What movies are you looking forward to, and what movies did I miss?
May 2 - Iron Man - A promising start to a summer full of superheroes. I expect Robert Downey Jr. to knock his performance out of the park, but I hope the rest of the cast and movie can keep up. A probable Thursday Midnight showing for me. Let's see how the work week goes.
May 9 - Speed Racer - One of the big question marks of the summer, they are pushing it heavily, and it has the recognition for our generation, but as many of us have mentioned, this seems destined to be a DVD rental for most of us. Iron Man should continue to be #1 this week.
May 16 - Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian - Not one for me, I haven't even seen the first one, but I know a lot of people are looking forward to this, and it definitely is also one our generation relates to. Obviously the people pushing movies these days are our age. It should dethrone Iron Man, but IM should continue to do well without another major Superhero or non-fantasy adventure flick competing. Speed Racer may drop significantly unless adopted by the younger set.
May 22 - Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - Harrison Ford, Spielburg, Lucas, $185M Budget, Thursday opening on Memorial Day Weekend. Expect records to be broken. Nuff said. I'll probably wait until the inital craze subsides since I'll be coming back from vacation. Then again, I will be back home on Memorial Day Monday.
(side note: World's worst director / producer Uwe Boll opens the movie Postal the same weekend. Look for it to make some headlines due to a 9/11 World Trade Center scene, but it looks to cement his bad reputation)
May 30 - Sex and the City - The movie husbands across America will be dragged to in revenge for all the fanboy movies we will drag our wives to. Either suck it up (admit it, you watched the show too), or do like I'm doing, offer to take her while cringing at the weak previews on TV. The wife is already saying she just isn't into like she used to be. Indy continues to roll, IM still trickling in with no direct Superhero competition.
June 6 - Kung Fu Panda vs You Don't Mess With the Zohan. - Dreamworks versus Adam Sandler/Judd Apatow. Overall nod to the Animated film, but I'd rather see Sandler in a good comedy again. Definitely a weekend to take a break from the movies though. Gotta rest up for the next wave of Superhero flicks.
June 13 - The Incredible Hulk - Destined to be better than Ang Lee's. I know I am looking forward to Ed Norton's version. Expect a full court media press by Marvel after Iron Man opens. They want to do The Avengers badly, and with Marvel controlling their films more, its a real possibility we could see Downey and Norton in a couple three years reprising their roles. Another midnight opener for me if possible. Expect the Gamma Man to knock Indy off the throne.
(side note: M. Night Shamalan's new movie The Happening opens with Mark Wahlberg. It could do well. I know I like seeing his movies, and will put it on my lst of possibles based on reviews)
June 20 - Get Smart vs The Love Guru - Steve Carell versus Mike Myers. Nostalgia should win out here, but it probably depends on who has the bigger marketing budget. Hopefully the Green Machine continues to roll, and I add Get Smart to the "I'll see it if the reviews are good enough" list.
June 23 - Wanted - Adapted from Mark Millar's graphic novel, the trailers show some innovative effects, taking Matrix type cinematography to new levels. Angelina Jolie shouldn't hurt the promotional side either. Bye Bye Hulk.
July 2 - Hancock - Will Smith as a drunk superhero. Good looking trailer. a Wednesday start on July 4th weekend. Expect a huge opening and the revolving door of #1 films to continue for a couple weeks.
July 11 - HB II - Another one to look forward to, Hell Boy should do well by waiting a month for Hulk to cool down. Superhero fatigue could hurt it, especially with the following weekend looming. I'll try to catch this on the weekend, its not something worth going into work bleary eyed for me.
July 18 - Dark Knight - Even superhero fatigue shouldn't be able to douse the excitement over this movie. Add in Heath Ledger's death and a great performace by Bale in BB, you have all the makings of the #1 box office of the year. Bleary Friday for sure, but I am still amazed they let Will Smith steal their July 4th weekend release. If this doesn't beat Iron Man and Hulk in $, then DC might as well hire Marvel Studios to do the rest of their movies. I'll almost feel sorry for modern toy collectors about now.
July 25 - X:Files - I Want to Believe - They should have named this I Want to Believe People Still Give a Crap. Dark Knight continues to roll in the #1 spot. Expect Step Brothers with Will Ferrell to win the new release battle. Stay home and grill out, or go see your favorite superhero flick a second time.
August 1 - The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Empress - Another iffy call here. Will Brendan Frasier continue to do well playing a younger cheaper version of Harrison Ford's character, or will Shia LaBoeuf make it clear that the mantle is his, and Fraser will look like a pretender in comparison? Releasing this movie the same summer as the Indy sequel is either genius or suicide, but it should knock DK off the throne, since the dropoff in week to week movie revenues is so exponential now.
August 8 - Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 vs The Pneapple Express - Married guys run for the hills. You've seen all the movies you really wanted to see anyway, so don't let your woman talk you into a Chick Flick sequel! Either take her on a romantic weekend or accidentally buy tickets for PE, another Judd Apatow comedy. Does anyone make comedies besides this guy now? The Mummy 3 should continue to roll.
August 15 - Star Wars: The Clone Wars - (formerly titled George Lucas' great great great grandchildren's college fund) - This should be on DVD by Thanksgiving, and likely shown on Cartoon Network shortly after. Several other movies opening, but none I know much about. If you're not tired of movies by now, knock yourself out.
September 12 - Punisher: War Zone - The summer ends with yet one more Marvel release. Another attempt by Marvel to swing their characters back into their original mold. It won't make the Top Ten movies of the year, but Superhero fans can look forward to getting their geek on one more time.
Edit NOTE: Looks like Punisher War Zone has been pushed to a December 5th release. After so many other comic book movies, its probably not a bad decision.
