Sick and Tired of Mowing Around Swing...?!!!!!

    ......Do what I did!!!

I told my wife when we get our new house, I was going to make a playground around the swing set because I hated weed-eating and mowing around it. I left enough room so they can put their sandbox or wading pool up and not kill my grass.

The mulch is ground up rubber from car tires. Under the mulch is stuff called landscape fabric to keep the weeds from growing. The wood border and fabric cost me about $90 (it is 20' x 16'). The mulch is over $9 a bag and it took me 35 bags (you do the math). Worth every penny now I do not have to cut around that stupid thing!!!!

I actually spent $200 more on this playground than I did on the swing set itself!!! We are planning on getting one of those more elaborate wooden swing sets in a couple years, when the girls get alittle older.

You should have found a bulk dealer for the mulch, it would have been a lot cheaper.

Yeah, but I am the kind of guy who doesn't plan my projects, start them on a whelm, and do them as fast as I can. If I put some thing off while waiting on something (i.e. the mulch), I will not finish it. I will lose interest.

Be careful of that rubber tire stuff though. That black smutz gets all over the kids' clothes and is nearly impossible to wash out, even w/ pre-wash.

There are two types of rubber, landscape and playground. The landscape rubber is not too clean and still has wire (bag said 99% wire free) and the playground stuff is wire free and alittle more clean. I was walking around on it bare foot and it doesn't leave my feet black.

T-Bolt, this is another reason why I used the bag stuff, not sure if a bulk dealer has the clean, wireless stuff.

Oh that's good. I worked at a child care center, and one of the parents was re-doing our yard and used the wrong kind of rubber! Boy, did we ever have some unhappy parents!

My big concern would be bare feet during hot weather.

We have had some issues with local park playgrounds and the padding placed underneath. Apparently, it would get so hot, it would burn kids feet during the Summer.

That looks nice, we have a playground set and I was thinking of something similar. Safer for the kids, and no more PITA mowing, it's win/win. The playgrounds around here have cedar (?) chips on top and I don't know what underneath (the ground is very springy though). Maybe that would be better regarding the heat problem mentioned? I have to find out what's underneath those chips.

I've been building my girls a climbing frame with slide and Pirates Flag.
