    Oscars

Academy Awards was hot and cold.

The main issue leading to the Oscars was lack of African Americans. No nominations in any of the acting category. But for others, it was great...as three years in a row, Mexicans have taken the Oscar for Best Director.

Chris Rock did venture into the politics of it all...but he mixed it up...also criticizing Jada Pinket...for she was not invited in the first place, and that she's currently on TV, not film. He also took a shot at Will Smith, complaining about not being nominated for Concussion, yet he still took $20 million for Wild Wild West...funny stuff from Rock, lol.

Leonardo DiCaprio FINALLY won for Best Actor on his sixth attempt...good for him, about time, he's a great actor. He gave a good darn speech too.

But my main gripe was Spotlight winning for Best Picture...it just didn't make sense. Mad Max Fury Roads wins six impressive Oscars...and The Revenant awards DiCaprio and director Alejandro González Iñárritu. Yet Spotlight takes the top award?

    What am I missing here?

P.S. Stacy Dash...awkward to say the least...on the other hand, she's 50 years old, and still looks fabulous.

Stacy Dash is 50??? I never would have guessed that. but yes that was an awkward moment. I only watched the first 40 minutes or so because Walking Dead was on. glad Leo finally got an award, he really is a great actor and deserved one years ago for Gilbert Grape.

I actually found all the race stuff to get old really fast. I am all for diversity and not discriminating, but enough already. maybe there were just no performances that were good enough to be nominated. I admit I did not see any of the nominated movies other than Fury Road, and I love Will Smith's movies, but maybe his performance was just not good enough to warrant a nomination. next year the academy will go way over board in the other direction to try and appease. I feel bad for non black actors for movies this year because they will get shunned for no real reason at all. I think it was Kerry Washington who said last night, something along the lines of we are all just people and the awards should not be based on color. absolutely right!

I DVRed everything, watched both the Oscars and Walking Dead like at 1 am in the morning or something, lol...

I did fast forward throughout the Oscars...a lot of it was a snooze fest, but it had its moments.

When I saw Gilbert Grape, I had never heard of DiCaprio before and thought, wow, they hired a mentally disabled person for the role. The guy is just amazing; glad he took Oscar home.

At least Mad Max took home six Oscars. The costume designer wore an Immortan Joe jacket. I like that...

And yeah, Star Wars got totally ignored. It'll be like LOTR: at the end of the trilogy you can get some Oscar gold, not before.

I never liked any kind of awards in entertainment because they're too subjective.

As an example, TV Guide listed Hogan's Heroes as the worst TV show ever made --- but, during it's run it had 12 Emmy nominations and won 2.

Mad Max just isn't the academy's type of movie to take home best picture. I was rooting for it. It's a shame that it was up against The Revenant for best director, though, because in a lot of other years, it would have won best director. They're both director's movies and The Revenant is a little more up their alley. Spotlight made perfect sense for the academy. It's an issue movie with a good ensemble cast. It's very reminiscent of the year Crash won. It actually was my personal second choice after Mad Max. I wasn't a fan of The Revenant, though Dicaprio was deserving. I did expect The Revenant to win, but thought there was a good chance that Spotlight or even The Big Short would sneak in there.

Your confusion regarding what wins "Best Picture" (a subjective phrase at best) is not at all a new one to me. To this day, I still fail to see how Spielberg got the Best Director Oscar for "Saving Private Ryan," yet the film itself, daresay to me one of Spielberg's best, got beaten out of the "Best Picture" Oscar by something as lightweight as "Shakespeare in Love."
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

It's frightening what this world is turning to. All of a sudden this Di Caprio guy is now in the same league as the immortal Al Pacino!

In all fairness, when was the last great Pacino? Hmmm. Heat?
Pacino, like DeNiro, is phoning it in these days, playing stereotypes.

I'm not a big DiCaprio fan, though I do feel he'd make a good Tony Stark. DiCaprio is a decent actor, but I've never been wowed by a performance of his.

I never cared for DiCaprio until Django.... Although I always thought he was masterful in Gilbert Grape.

But his performance in Django sold me

I don't care much for DiCaprio away from the big screen but really he is a hell of an actor. I've enjoyed almost every film I've seen him in.
