National Geographic Channel's "Generation X" - Talkin' 'bout our generation...?

Aside from "Vinyl" the other (sort-of) '70s themed show I saw yesterday was the first episode of this 6 part (I think) series. I just stumbled upon it randomly, and decided to see how long I could take it. I figured going in that it would be yet another of those throwaway "talking heads and news clips " things that VH1 started years ago with "The '70s", "The '80s", etc., and that's exactly what it turned out to be. Narrated by Christian Slater and featuring people like Courtney Love and Kevin Smith (as well as the usual random assortment of "who's that again?" types), this seemed to focus mostly on the negative events that supposedly shaped us into the cynical, slacker-y stereotypes that you've all seen before. Vietnam, Watergate, AIDS, crack, divorce, etc. The more pop-cultural oriented bits seemed to consist mostly of how we were all brainwashed by commercials (especially those by Oscar Meyer, apparently) and copious clips of Nirvana and Reality Bites.

I have a few more thoughts on this, but I'll cut it short here because I doubt anyone else watched it. Feel free to chime in if you did, though.

I saw some of it. It looked like its topics jumped around a good bit. I wish someone would do a series that goes more into detail.

That's the problem with most of these. They either make fun of whatever decade they're talking about(VH-1) or they have to make it seem like times weren't as great as you thought. Which is a bit of a downer and why I avoid stuff like that. They really need to follow how History Channel's 'Modern Marvels' did it with the various tech through the decades and focus on the positive.
