Admittedly I don't have any kids or family members 3-8 years old but went to Christmas toy shopping and there was entire rows of yellow people. I googled the movie and it grossed $1.5 Billion. Is this wildy popular among kids or something?

Yup. They are a spin-off from Despicable Me, an animated spoof of a supervillain and his minions who ends up having a change of heart due to some children. I saw it in the theater and seemed to be the only one who wasn't laughing at the antics of the Minions, thereby proving I am officially old.
But, yeah, I don't get 'em. -
I can't help it. I love the Minions. It's silly and childish, I know, but sometimes I need that....

We love the Minions at our house too. The solo movie wasn't nearly as good as the other films, but still fun. They work better as supporting characters.
