    A Very Special Christmas Episode

Something I love doing this time of year is re-watching the holiday episodes from classic TV series. And the proliferation of networks like MeTV and Antennae have me scanning the TV guide and filling up my DVR with holiday goodness. MeTV is even cherry-picking some episodes and running them at 9pm this month. I generally prefer the sitcoms, but couldn't resist Kojak trying to prevent two murders on Christmas eve. Last night was Bob Newhart's "I'm Dreaming of a Slight Christmas." Man, that show holds up.

I think THE single most overused plot is doing a take on 'A Christmas Carol' using the show's cast on cheap, dry ice smoke-filled sets. Although Felix makes a perfect ghost to show Ebenezer Madison the foolishness of his ways.

The best Christmas episode of a TV show for me is a tie between the Andy Griffith show with the old curmudgeon who wants to be locked up at Christmas, and the first Happy Days episode where Richie invites Fonzie over to the house for the first time.

Did they already show the Kojak, ep? Man I missed it! But I love Christmas editions of the old shows. I wish Batman had done a real Christmas ep, instead of Santa doing a window cameo. Couldn't you just see the Riddler or the Joker, or better yet, Eartha Kitt's Catwoman holding Santa for ransom?

"Santa Baby...gonna hold ya for a cool million...or two."
"Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."

How about the classic TV shows that didn't have Christmas specials? Imagine Star Trek. The crew must to back in time to prevent King Herod from killing the baby Jesus. Kirk, Spock and and Scotty pose as the three wise men while McCoy delivers the baby. Mary is played by Julie Newmar.

Or how about Hogan's Heroes? The POW's and Germans call a truce like during the "Battle of the Bulge." Colonel Hogan, Klink and Sargent Shultz all sing Christmas carols around the guard tower, which they string lights on like a Christmas tree. Except nobody invites Lebeau, because he's French and annoyed both sides anyway.

Lost opportunities for much Christmas merriment abound, it seems.
