Back in the day, I worked at a local electronics and appliance store. I can remember sitting in a managers meeting and the boss showed everyone these new devices: a VHS , Betamax and laser disc players. We discussed which format we thought folks would embrace because the boss wanted to be the first to stock movies in town. We ended up with $10,000 worth of movies in laserdisc and Betamax formats. No VHS. I think they are still sitting there today.
remember video 2000 i never knew anyone with one of those.
We had one of those. We had tons of tapes, and then they quickly dropped the whole thing and left us hanging. Thanks, Video 2000! Superior quality, yeah, right...

I think Beta was also used in the recording industry. Someone had found a way to use Beta to record in recording studios. I though I read that somewhere a while back. I could be wrong.

I had just finished taping every episode of classic Trek, when they abandoned the brand and you couldn't even get fresh tapes anymore.
And remember, a player was expensive in those days. You didn't just buy a spare one to keep in your closet until the first one died on you.

We never got that format in the States or (I think) in Canada. Pretty much a European thing with a little Brazil thrown in.

While VHS became the public's format, Beta actually became the industry standard for professionals as they moved away from film. Some movies, a lot of television and all of news programs used Beta for its quality and editing benefits. News used Beta right up the transition to digital.
I still have a working Toshiba Beta recorder. Not that is a usual thing for people in here. I just have it so I could buy cheap tapes at the fleamarket and find old TV recordings from the good old days, you know those with commercials, and such. And I have some original movies, too. Staying Alive, Saturday Night Fever, and some Jack Nicholson movies, too. Also, in the 90's I used to have this big 1980 Sony Betamax promotional poster that I got from a store that was closing hanging in the wall of my Stereo room. Nowadays I have it for sale locally: http://articulo.mercadolibre.cl/MLC-...rovidencia-_JM
