How would you handle this ???????????

So last Tuesday at work the guy (idiot) that was parked beside me hit my car as he was leaving. Cut his wheel to soon and the front passenger side tire , bumper and fender flare on his truck hit my rear door. The jerk just left, okay maybe, just maybe he didn't feel it hit. But the next day when I asked him about it, even pointed out that the dent and marks match up perfectly he straight up denies it. Work says they are not responsible for it, he says it wasn't him so I'm eating the deductible to get it fixed.
What would you do in this case, retaliate and do damage to his truck, ignore him from here out , what ?
I guess what bugs me the most is that no one from management has even said "Hey John, you think you might have hit Ben's car ? "
At least he would be lying to them too, not just me.
For now I'm just dented in OHIO

I guess I'd call the police and have them take a paint sample.

Let it go. These things can escalate into things which are far worse. You're obviously dealing with a dishonest person to begin with.

Unless there is a lot of paint transfer on his car, I think you're not going to have a strong enough case, Ben.
He'll just deny it, and management obviously doesn't want the hassle.
I'd just give him the cold shoulder from now on. Don't retaliate, it'll just escalate, maybe even backfire.

Keep your cool, and maybe one day, when he doesn't expect it, and when he is in a weak position, pull the rug out from under him.
              Let Karma get him.
But I do understand your anger. When someone treats you unfairly, it's hard to not hit back, especially if you know it's a total ****.

This is exactly what I was going to say. Be the better person and don't retaliate - for a lot of reasons.

I would go to him quietly, and say look...we BOTH know you did it, now own up to it and make it right, OR we can get the police involved. Tell him you WILL press charges for hit/skip leaving the scene of an accident. He can deny it all he wants, but if the police investigate they will easily be able to determine he did it.

My neighbor tried this crap with me after his wife hit my wife's car and he crumbled under the threat of police involvement.

Sounds like it might work as well, but you never know just how crazy this guy may be, how he'll respond.
What do you know about this guy? Is he the kind of guy who would just make it worse and worse?

i would consider a call to the police and let them handle it. if they cannot prove it was him then you have lost nothing. however, if they don't prove it was him, it could cause issues for you at work so it is a touchy situation

What a creep! He should man up and let the insurance companies do their thing. Taking responsibility for a fender bender is not the end of the world. It's not that hard. Sorry, Ben.

Don't retaliate. No good can come of it. You're sacrificing instant gratification for a meaningful resolution.

First, call the police and see if you can actually file a report on it at this point.

Let them investigate. Let's be honest, it shouldn't take long. If they can identify that it was his car, let THEM approach him and let him know the situation. Hearing from an officer might make this guy more inclined to fess up. And, if not, let him bear the ramifications of it (a couple of tickets - I'm guessing one for the accident itself, and the other for leaving the scene of an accident). If he chooses to do nothing, he'll get the tickets and his insurance will skyrocket. You should be able to get his insurance to pay for everything at that point.

If he steps up, you don't have to press charges. The police will give you that option.

I had a VERY similar situation happen at work. Fortunately, work has surveillance cameras in the parking lot and we were able to identify the culprit. Her insurance cut me a check and I was on my way to the tune of about $450 or so. Fortunately, the damage was minimal and I could live with a scuff on my bumper in exchange for that amount.

Donkey is right on every point. DO NOT retailiate. You are now on record with this guy and management can corroborate the accusation. So not just can he press charges against you, you have a good shot at getting fired.

Call the non-emergency police line. Tell them what's up. Someone will take your statement, some pics and then see if there are paint samples on yours or his car. They should also measure the hit dimensions and see if it fits his car. That usually halts insurance from fighting it. The cop will say, you should have at that moment, and you should have taken pics of the scene undisturbed.

What your management is trying to do is "fix the glitch". By no co-operating with you, they're not escalating anything. This is usually an HR mandate. Once you get the cops involved, if the lot has CCTV, they have to turn it over. If they've erased the tapes, that will be noted.

I had this happen years ago at a gas station. The guy was drunk./stoned, just off work and his bumper had wood 2x4 extensions. I saw him sheer my side while I was pumping gas. I called him out, he went ballistic and scared the crap out of everyone else. I went in and the cashier wouldn't call the cops, (pre-cell phone days), or admit what he saw ten feet in front of him. This was in a monied suburb too, not the stix or projects. By the time I got the cops, the guy had bolted and everyone else took the f off before giving a statement.

                            Sorry this had to happen.
