Halloween Kinder Scare- What Scared The Beejebers Out Of You As A Kid, but now...

For Halloween, what scared the smaller, younger you back in the day. They might even seem silly now, but I grew up bejeeber-less because of them.

Two things come to mind, right away-
-Charlie X - At some point in the Star Trek episode, he yells at someone off-camera that he thinks is laughing at him. The laughing stops and the person comes from around the corner with NO FACIAL FEATURES AT ALL!!! Yeah, it's, just some kind of stocking-like material over the face, but it seemed so cruel and a terrible way to die.

-Kolchak: Night Stalker - Brian and Jason forced me to relive this childhood horror a few weeks back. There's an episode where it looks like people are spontaneously combusting. The quick shot of a charred body sitting on a lounge chair (if I remember correctly) was all too real for young Billy. I was pretty young so I barely remember watching this, but that scene was not what I needed to see after staying up too late.
    WANTED - Solid-Boxed WGSH's, C.8 or better.

When I was about 6 I went to collect my annual haul of candy, I came to a house that had a gi-normous spider on the porch. It was off to the side, and in my rush to get more loot, I didn't see it on the way to the door. I turned to leave and I saw this thing, froze and proceeded to scream like I was stabbed. I dropped my sack and ran four blacks home leaving my Mom and sister to fend for themselves. To this day at 43, I'm terrified of spiders. Thanks Mrs. Wooldridge....

When I was very young in the 60's was a huge fan of the mid 60's Paul Winchell show featuring his dummies Jerry Mahoney and Knucklehead.

I even owned a Jerry Mahoney doll.

This was all well and good until I started watching reruns of the Twilight Zone -- especially the ones featuring the evil dummies.

It scare me so much I stopped watching Paul Winchell.

Walt Disney's Scarecrow of Romney Marsh scared me, Patrick McGoohan's laugh in particular. Now its a favorite.

As a child I was terrified of the Mrs. Beasley doll. Now I am merely wary of her.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

Halloween Records... Disney's Chilling Thrilling Sounds of the Haunted House, especially the first track, was a masterpiece of sound. Also, from "Spooky Halloween" by Ruth Roberts (aka "Halloween Songs that Tickle Your Funny Bone") The first 30 seconds of There is a Haunted House in Town used to make me practically wet my pants.

              Here it is:

Lon Chaney Jr. My grandfather was a HUGE Abbott & Costello fan, and in the days before widespread VCRs and commercial video tapes, a local station was going to air Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein. Unfortunately, his TV was at the repair shop (imagine that!). So he comes over to our house to watch it, and the whole family sits in, including 4 year old me. Of course Larry Talbot succumbs to his curse within the first few minutes of the film, and as he started to change...I lost my crap. I went HYSTERICAL. The TV was turned off, Papaw went home, and Chris was scared to death of monsters and in particular werewolves for the next several years.

Now The Wolf Man is my favorite Universal film, and favorite character. Go figure.

I read some of the EC Comics as a kid.
One had a guy hanging upside down with a tap in his neck, for vampires to drink from.
The other had some freak living in a swamp house with a trap door.

Man, I didn't sleep well for many nights...

Island of Terror scared the crap out of me as a kid, so what if the monsters were full of spaghetti.

That made it into the Amicus Vault of Horror movie. Maybe you could face your fears and have a major catharsis.

Oh yeah. That's a great one! Sound helps the mind's eye concoct the scariest imaginable images.
