Kickstarter for Dragons Lair the movie

Animation veteran Don Bluth and Gary Goldman have started a kickstarter to have a feature film made of the classic Dragons Lair game of the '80s.

I hope this gets made. I have always wondered why a movie was never done. There was a short lived Saturday morning cartoon but the animation was no where near the quality of a Bluth movie.

I don't know. while I would love to see a Dragons lair movie, this whole kickstarter bit to make a movie bothers me. if the studio's don't have faith in the property I don't see how getting the fans to pay for it will work

Beautiful classic Disney style animation in that game. It's a classic arcade game but it was really never fun to play and controlled poorly. I actually liked the animated series as kid and remember it was narrated by Clive Revill. Hopefully they will ignore the bizarre time travel storyline of the second game.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

          I never realized that!

The arcade game was so ahead of its time: people would poor endless quarters in those machines, despite all the game's flaws, just because it looked so awesome.

There was always such a long line up for this game (and space ace) that I never did get a chance to play it.
Wasn't it a bit like a chose your own adventure type game? With moments where you very quickly had to move your joystick to corrospond with movements on screen? Have they really never made an updated version to this?

Theres versions for newer systems like the Xbox 360, but its basically the same game. I'm not aware of one after Dragons Lair 2. There has been actual videogames based on the original like Dragons Lair 3D.

The reason their doing a kickstarter is because its hard to have a traditional animated movie done at the studios now. They want a quick turnaround which is why all of them are done with computers. Bluth does it the old fashion way and it will look fantastic like all his other quality movies in the past. I actually think his cartoons may be slightly above classic Disney quality depending on the film (Lion King being their biggest achievement. IMO).

If I remember correctly, it cost a lot more to play than other video games, maybe a buck? It still always had a line waiting to play it. The thing used a laserdisc for the video/audio.

Some places 75c, others a dollar. I imagine to maintain the laserdisc machine took a little more work.

A little bit of Dragon's Lair history.

Some storyboards from planned but abandoned 1983 Dragon's Lair movie.
