You did the right thing. If only everyone has such integrity. As I was walking through the supermarket parking lot the other day, I noticed a purse in a cart. A car next to the cart was about to pull away. I flagged the woman and pointed to her purse. She was thankful, and I was happy to catch her. Someone else may have waited and stole whatever was in there.
Good deals like those hopefully don't go unnoticed one way or another.

You did the right thing, although I would have mailed it back with no return address, just because in this day
in age playing a good samaratin also makes it look like you have a guilty conscience plus the fact this
particular person never offered anything in return, so now you think "heck" if I knew the guy was like this
I would have kept the money and mailed the wallet back unanimously.

Would probably be better to hand it in to the police rather than return it.

People nowadays are kinda rotten --- I wouldn't be surprised if a few people complained you stole something out of it (even if you didn't)

I would never return it to the police, simply because there gut instinct may make them think you had something
to do with it (or) think your covering for someone, they'll ask for your personal info, and then do a background
check on you. The best thing to do is mail it to them unanimously, saves a lot of explaining.

A few years ago I found $600 raw cash in a parking lot with no wallet. Since there was no ID I was tempted to keep it. When I got home my wife suggested I try to find the rightful owner. To make a long story short, I did and boy was that the right move. The guy who lost it needed it WAY more than I. He thanked me graciously and peeled off a hundy and gave it to me.

A few years ago, I found a phone in a parking lot. I picked it up...but didn't know what to do with it. It finally rang, I answered, and it was this woman pleading for me to return it. I did, landed right smack in the middle of the ghetto. I handed the phone to the woman, she gave me a death stare...then the boyfriend come out of the house...mad dogging me...like if I did something wrong. Well, I just said, gotta go...and hoped in my car...and took off.

That's why from experiences like that, and tons of others...and please forgive me for saying this...but I hate most people (perhaps not most, but a whole lot of them for sure)..and if I ever come across another phone on the ground, I'm going to stomp the living hell out of it.

                Amen...

Good call, man. You did the right thing.
When people say they found large amounts of money in different places it reminds me of a guy I know that got out of logging camp, cashed his check and went to the lake with it in his hat. At the end of day he put the hat on the top of the car and drove off so the cash could have ended up all over the place. He went back but couldnt find any of it. An expensive lesson, but that money could have ended up in some strange places that you wouldn't expect to find cash.

2 years ago when we were at the airport to fly to Germany, I found a wallet under the chair. it was a foreigner's. I swear I had a hell of a time finding someone to turn it over to. talk about weird security stuff at airports. the people at the security check, which we had already gone through, would not take it because it was already in the terminal?? ***? I finally found a security guard to give it to. she probably pocketed the cash and tossed the rest, but at least I did the right thing.

There is no need for conjecture, as I have done this countless times. Everything was always returned exactly as it was found -- cash included -- every single time. The most elaborate return was when I found a wallet full of cash in the back of a Chicago taxi, and had to mail it to the guy in New York, who had lost it on his trip to the airport and had been devastated over the loss... And he expressed to me his his renewed faith in mankind.

My conscience is clear, and karma is stacked in my favor. The world is already such a cruel and unfair place -- why not make it be a little bit better? Plus, it is simply the decent and Christian thing to do.

years ago when I was in college and working in a gas station, a woman lost her wallet after pumping gas. I actually felt guilty about having to go through it to find ID and look her up to call her. she came back to get it and was very grateful and even wrote a letter to the company thanking me.

I always try to put myself in the position as being the one who lost it and would hope some decent person found it and returned it

                            You did the right thing.

I am not surprised at all that you were tempted to keep it. That tells me that you actually think through ethical dilemmas and choose to do the right thing. You are what you choose to do, not what you are tempted to do.

Do you know how much it would have cost to replace the wallet and all the ID and bank cards? You saved the guy way more than the small amount of cash that he had in his wallet.
